geography
Geographical location
Neuenstein is located in the Knüllgebirge in the catchment area of the Geisbach , which rises here and flows into the Fulda in Bad Hersfeld , which is about ten kilometers south-east .
Neighboring communities
Neuenstein borders in the north on the municipality Knüllwald (in the Schwalm-Eder district ), in the east on the municipality Ludwigsau , in the south on the city of Bad Hersfeld and the municipality Kirchheim (all in the district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg); in the southwest to the municipality of Oberaula , and in the west to the city of Schwarzenborn (both in the Schwalm-Eder district).
Community structure
The community consists of the districts Aua , Gittersdorf , Mühlbach , Obergeis , Raboldshausen , Saasen , Salzberg and Untergeis . The municipal administration is located in the centrally located district of Aua.
history
The first documentary mention of one of the districts is Aua ("Owe"), which was mentioned in 852 in a deed of donation to the Hersfeld Abbey . The Hersfeld abbot founded a monastery here in 1190, but it was moved to Blankenheim, now part of Bebra , as early as 1229 .
The place "Salzesberg" was mentioned in 1190 for the first time. There is a document from 782 about this place, but the authenticity is disputed. All other places were first mentioned in writing in the 12th and 13th centuries. Most of the districts were owned by the Hersfeld Abbey for a long time or were fiefs of the Lords of Wallenstein . Albert I von Wallenstein built a castle above Saasen, which was first mentioned in 1267 as Neuwallenstein. (Ancestral castle of the Wallensteins was Wallenstein Castle in Knüllwald , Wallenstein district.) On July 24, 1318, the castle, which had become a robber barons nest, was taken over by troops of the Hessian Landgrave Otto , the Hersfeld Abbot Simon I von Buchenau , the Count Johann I von Ziegenhain and the land peace judge and Reichslandvogts in the Wetterau, Eberhard III. von Breuberg , destroyed. It was only rebuilt in 1357 by Simon von Wallenstein.
The Castle Neuenstein now serves as a conference and events center.
- Church building
The places Aua, Gittersdorf, Mühlbach, Raboldshausen, Saasen, Salzberg and Untergeis merged as part of the regional reform in Hesse with effect from December 31, 1971 to form the new community of Neuenstein. Obergeis was incorporated by state law on August 1, 1972.
It was named after the medieval name of Neuwallenstein Castle (now called Neuenstein Castle), from which the community name was derived.
