history

Gothic monastery church (northern wing of the monastery area) with the attached western wing

The district Rockensüß was first mentioned in 1274 and the district Königswald in 1351. The actual Cornberg settlement was only created from 1938 to 1941 for the miners and smelters in the copper slate mining in the Richelsdorf Mountains and was then in the district of Rockensüß. It is the only new settlement in the old district of Rotenburg since the Thirty Years War . On April 1, 1954, the new community Cornberg was formed from this settlement and parts of the previous districts of Rockensüß, Mönchhosbach and Rautenhausen.

A Benedictine monastery had existed here since 1296 , a subsidiary of the Hersfeld Abbey , which had previously been located in Bubenbach as the St. Nikolai Monastery . The Cornberg monastery was abolished in 1526 and converted into an agricultural estate for the Hessian landgraves.

In 1574 Philipp Wilhelm von Cornberg , an illegitimate son of Landgrave Wilhelm IV of Hesse-Kassel , received the former monastery and its lands from his father as a hereditary fiefdom and named himself after it. Philipp Wilhelm sold it in 1598 to his half-brother, Landgrave Moritz von Hessen-Kassel, who handed it over to the sons from his second marriage in 1627 as part of the Rotenburger Quart . It was a bailiwick that until the extinction of the Landgrave of Hesse-Rotenburg was in 1834 in their possession and then to Kurhessen fell back.

The former monastery was a state domain until 1964, and from 1946 it was owned by the State of Hesse. The dilapidated commercial and residential buildings around the monastery were demolished between 1957 and 1973. Only the Gothic monastery area has been preserved; it was repaired from 1990 to 1994. The former two-aisled church (north wing of the monastery area) with the still preserved nuns' gallery is used today as a cultural stage. The community center and the museum are housed in two further wings. There is a restaurant in the east wing.

From 1945 to 1949, the whole of Cornberg and the former UNRRA monastery were DP camps . Mainly former slave laborers from the Soviet Union and Poland were housed here. Many of them emigrated from here to Canada or the USA.

Incorporations

On October 1, 1971, the old communities Cornberg and Rockensüß merged as part of the regional reform in Hesse . On August 1, 1972, the previous municipality of Königswald was incorporated.

coat of arms

Cornberg coat of arms
Blazon : “The coat of arms is divided. Above in silver a striding red lion. Below is a shaft of red and silver arranged in three rows of five places. "

The coat of arms was awarded to the community by the Hessian Minister of the Interior on February 26, 1981.

Justification of the coat of arms: The municipal coat of arms is borrowed from the family coat of arms of the Barons von Cornberg and is only slightly different in color. The striding lion represents the family's descent from the House of Hesse . The chess stands in the family coat of arms for a chessboard and is held in the family coat of arms in the colors blue, red and silver.
