Local elections in Thuringia 2018

The local elections in Thuringia 2018 took place on April 15, 2018. The district administrator was elected in 14 districts, the mayor in all 6 urban districts and the full-time or honorary mayor or mayor in 100 districts in Thuringia. If no candidate received a majority of the votes, the winner was determined in a runoff on April 29, 2018 .

1.58 million citizens aged 16 and over were eligible to vote.

Lord Mayor

There were mayor elected in the cities:

Katharina Schenk (SPD), André Neumann (CDU) and Frank Schütze (individual applicants) competed in Altenburg. Neumann received 55.6% of the vote.
In Eisenach, incumbent Katja Wolf (Die Linke, 47.4%) won the runoff election against Michael Klostermann (SPD, 19.3%). There the incumbent was re-elected with 58.0%.
In Erfurt incumbent Andreas Bausewein (SPD, 30.4%) and Marion Walsmann (CDU, 21.9%) reached the runoff election. Bausewein was re-elected there with 58.5%. Eight candidates stood for election.
Incumbent Viola Hahn (non-party, 20.6%) had five opponents. They missed the runoff election, in which Julian Vonarb (independent, 23.5%) and Dieter Laudenbach (AfD, 21.3%) moved. Vonarb won the election with 69.8%.
Incumbent Knut Kreuch (SPD) was challenged by Jens Wehner (CDU) and two other candidates. He defended his office with 61.1% of the vote.
Of nine candidates, including the author and physicist Heidrun Jänchen ( Pirate Party ), incumbent Albrecht Schröter (SPD, 24.5%) and Thomas Nitzsche (FDP, 27.0%) reached the runoff election. There Nitzsche was able to prevail against Schröter with 63.3%.
The challengers Ines Goldmann (CDU) and Björn-Guido Kirchner (individual applicants) competed against Johannes Bruns (SPD). He defended his office and received 62.7% of the vote.
In addition to the non-party incumbent Jens Triebel (42.5%), André Knapp (CDU, 37.9%) reached the runoff election and was just able to prevail against the incumbent with 52.4%.
Incumbent Stefan Wolf (SPD, 21.5%) was defeated by Peter Kleine (non-party for CDU, 60.3%).

Election of the district administrator

The district administrator was elected in 14 of 17 counties .

Incumbent Michaele Sojka (left, 26.7%) and Uwe Melzer (CDU, 37.3%) reached the runoff election, which Melzer clearly won with 68.8%.
In the Eichsfeld district, incumbent Werner Henning (CDU) defended his office with 82.2%.
Holger Kruse (CDU), Onno Eckert (SPD), Steffen Fuchs (Bündnis 90 / Die Grüne), Jens Seeber (FDP) and Klaus Schmitz-Gielsdorf (non-party) applied to succeed Konrad Gießmann . Eckert (37.8%) and Kruse (24.8%) reached the runoff, in which Eckert prevailed with 67.0%.
District Administrator Martina Schweinsburg (CDU) defended her office with 65.9%.
Incumbent Thomas Müller (CDU) was challenged by Reinhard Hotop (SPD) and Tommy Frenck . Frenck stood for the right-wing extremist alliance Zukunft Hildburghausen . Müller defended his office with 61.1% of the vote.
Petra Enders (Die Linke, 53.6%) was confirmed in office.
Antje Hochwind (SPD), Jens Krautwurst (CDU) and Björn Hornschu (AfD) competed in the Kyffhäuserkreis . Hochwind received 57.2% of the vote.
Incumbent Andreas Heller (CDU) had three challengers. He defended his office with just 53.2%.
Christiane Barth (CDU), Peggy Greiser (non-party, supported, among others, by the SPD) and Hartmut Kremmer (non-party for the FDP) applied for the successor to Peter Heimrich . Greiser was elected (52.8%).
Harald Henning (CDU) ran as incumbent unopposed candidate and received 98.1% of the votes
Danny Dobmeier (CDU), Hans-Peter Schmitz (independent) and Robert Stuhlmann (AfD) wanted to succeed Christine Zitzmann , who was no longer running for reasons of age. Dobmeier (32.5%) and Schmitz (37.6%) reached the runoff election. Schmitz won there with 56.2% of the vote.
District Administrator Harald Zanker (SPD) defended his office with 56.5%.
In the Wartburg district, incumbent Reinhard Krebs (CDU) received 71.3% of the vote.
Christiane Schmidt-Rose (CDU), Julian Schwark (SPD) and Simon Ehrenreich (AfD) stood for election. Schmidt-Rose prevailed with 60.4% of the vote.
