The conclave of 1823 met from September 2nd to 28th, 1823. It elected Cardinal Vicar Annibale Sermattei della Genga as Pope . He took the Pope's name Leo XII. on.

General and election process

After the death of Pope Pius VII on August 20, 1823, Cardinal Dean Giulio Maria della Somaglia called the cardinals together for a conclave.

During the Sedis vacancy , Bartolomeo Pacca carried out official business as Camerlengo .

The papabili were Francesco Saverio Castiglioni , who was supported by the more political cardinals, and Antonio Gabriele Severoli , the candidate of the Zelanti . Cardinal Giuseppe Albani however presented the veto of the Austrian Emperor Franz I against Severoli.

In the conclave, Severoli, Castiglioni and della Somaglia were initially ahead. Nevertheless, none of them could achieve the necessary two-thirds majority . The Zealots finally agreed on Cardinal Sermattei della Genga, who then also became Leo XII. could ascend the papal throne .
