The conclave of 1406 (November 18-30) was a conclave in the time of the Western Schism . It took place after the death of Pope Innocent VII and elected Cardinal Angelo Correr as his successor, who took the Pope's name Gregory XII. assumed. He was the fourth Pope in Roman obedience .

The election of Gregory XII.

Fourteen cardinals present in Rome entered the conclave on November 18, twelve days after the death of Innocent VII.

At the beginning they signed the Apostolic Letter to the Conclave , in which each of them vowed to resign after an election if Antipope Benedict XIII. did the same or should die, nor would they appoint new cardinals, except to maintain parity with the Avignon College of Cardinals . After all, they would start negotiations to meet the rival within three months.

Furthermore, hardly any details are known about this conclave, apart from the result. On November 30th, Cardinal Angelo Correr was elected unanimously on the proposal of Cardinal Antonio Caetani . He took the Pope's name Gregory XII. on. Although he stressed the legitimacy of his pontificate , he abdicated nine years later in the Council of Constance , which made it possible to restore the unity of the Roman Catholic Church.
