The Koulountou is a river in the West African states of Guinea-Conakry and Senegal . According to the average annual runoff, it is the Gambia's largest tributary in this river system.

geography

The Koulountou rises in Guinea in the northern foothills of the mountains of Fouta Djallon . The source river with the longest valley path and the strongest and widest flow tracks that can be seen from a satellite perspective rises northeast of the village of Barkere on the southern foothills of a mountain range up to 640 m high, on whose ridge the border with Senegal runs. The headwaters are located in a wooded valley floor about 460 m above sea level on the north-western border of the Mali prefecture of the Labé region in northern Guinea.

After 61 km of a valley path leading in a south-westerly direction , the Koulountou takes on the 57 km long southern source river Kouravel from the left. This rises 2 km southwest of the high-lying village of Himaya on the southern slope of an approximately 650 m high mountain, not further designated by name, in a valley floor about 310 m high. The village and headwaters lie on the eastern border of the Gaoual prefecture in the Boké region in northern Guinea.

After around 81 km of flow, the Koulountou changes its south-westerly direction and is now heading north-west. At river kilometer 218 it reaches the border of Senegal, part of which it remains for another 10 kilometers westward. Its strongly meandering lower course forms the border between the Tambacounda region in the east and the Kolda region in the west and thus also the eastern border of the Casamance . The bank region on both sides of the river represents the western edge of the Niokolo-Koba National Park .

The Koulountou joins the middle reaches of the Gambia from the left and south . At the mouth, the river bed is almost 30 meters wide, while the Gambia flows here to about 80 meters wide. At the lower reaches the banks are accompanied by dense forests.
