The Tambacounda region with the capital Tambacounda is the largest region of Senegal and is located in the southeast of the country. Part of the Niokolo-Koba National Park occupies the south of the region.
Geographical location
The Tambacounda region is addressed together with the Kédougou region as Sénégal oriental , but in terms of its topographical nature and location it is less a peripheral area than a hub for the interaction of the parts of the country, because it borders not only on four other regions (Matam, Kaffrine, Sédhiou and Kédougou), but in between also with four of the five neighboring countries of Senegal: in the west it borders on Gambia , in the south on Guinea and in the east on Mali and Mauritania .
The Tambacounda region is part of many of the country's river basins. In the east the Falémé and Senegal are border rivers, in the south these are the Niokolo Koba , the Gambia and the Koulountou . The Niéri Ko lies entirely in the region, the Sandougou almost completely and the Saloum at least the upper reaches.

The Dakar – Niger railway runs through the region and connects Bamako , the capital of the neighboring landlocked state Mali , with the port city of Dakar . The regional prefecture of Tambacounda is the largest junction in the national trunk road network outside the capital region of Dakar. National roads go from here in five directions.
The Tambacounda Airport (Aéroport de Tambacounda) as a continental airport and the Bakel Airport (Aérodrome de Bakel) and the Simenti Airport in the Niokolo-Koba National Park complement the region's transport infrastructure.
history
The Tambacounda region was divided in 2008. The southeastern part south of the Niokolo Koba has since formed the Kédougou region .

At the next structural levels, 12 arrondissements, 8 municipalities (Communes), 38 rural communities (Communautés rurales) and 1,434 officially registered villages (Villages) are to be named for 2013.
