Location of the municipality Krayenberggemeinde in the Wartburg district | ||
The Krayenberggemeinde is a municipality in the Wartburg district in Thuringia . The administrative seat is the district of Dorndorf . A good 5000 people live in the community. It is the only German municipality that has the term municipality in its name. The community is named after the Krayenberg .
geography
The community is located in the west of the Wartburg district. In the east of the municipality rises the conical Krayenberg with the ruins of the Krayenburg castle on the summit, but the summit is in the area of the neighboring town of Tiefenort . The northern hinterland is part of the Frauenseer Forest , the also wooded southern edge of the Werra Valley near Merkers and Dorndorf borders the northern foothills of the Rhön . The Felda flows into the Werra at Dorndorf . This natural access was used in the 19th century when the Feldabahn was built .
Due to the high groundwater level in the floodplains of the Werra, with frequent floods during the year, the agricultural areas are mainly spread along the moderately steep valley slopes. Pasture farming predominates. The previously used arable land on the heights was abandoned after 1900 by afforestation with spruce and beech. Considerable parts of the meadow landscape were placed under nature protection.
Neighboring communities
The Krayenberg municipality has the following neighboring municipalities: The district town of Bad Salzungen in the north and east, the municipality of Leimbach in the southeast, the district Stadtlengsfeld of the municipality of Dermbach in the south and the city of Vacha in the west.

history
The districts of today's Krayenberg community were first mentioned in a document between the 12th and 14th centuries. Dorndorf was already 786 as Thoranthorpf of Charlemagne the monastery Hersfeld been paid.
In the late 19th century the industrialization of the until then rural region began. In 1878 the region was initially connected to the railway network with narrow gauges, from 1899 potash shafts were sunk at Dietlas, Merkers and Dorndorf. In the 20th century, the municipality developed as part of the Werra potash district into a center of potash mining with shafts and factories in Dorndorf and Merkers; the former winding towers and spoil heaps still characterize the landscape in the vicinity of Merkers.
In 1994 Dorndorf and Dietlas united to form a single community, as did Merkers and Kieselbach.
On December 31, 2013, the Krayenberg community was formed from the merger of the communities of Dorndorf and Merkers-Kieselbach .

Economy and Infrastructure
economy
The municipal area was once a focus of the potash industry in the Werra potash district . Shafts have been in the communities of Dietlas, Dorndorf and Merkers since the beginning of the 20th century. The potash works in Dorndorf and Merkers were among the largest potash works of their time. At the location of the Dietlas potash mine, which was shut down before the Second World War, a factory for mining machines was built, which gained great importance during the GDR as VEB Bergwerksmaschinen Dietlas . The potash shafts and works in Dorndorf and Merkers were shut down until 1993 and then largely demolished. Only part of the Merkers factory has been preserved as the Merkers adventure mine .
Today there is an industrial area on the former Merkers potash works. A recycling company has set up shop on a former potash heap on the eastern outskirts of Dorndorf and a wood processing company is located on the western outskirts of Dorndorf. The former mining machine factory in the Dietlas district was completely demolished in 2013 to make room for a solar system.
traffic
The high volume of traffic on federal highway 62 , which is seen as a burden, especially in the historical locations of Merkers and Dorndorf, is seen as a disadvantage for the community today . In addition, the federal road 84, which runs from Eisenach through Kieselbach, joins the village of Dorndorf and runs together with the B62 in the direction of Vacha and Geisa . An earlier section of the federal road 285 runs as a state road from Dorndorf via Dietlas into the southern Wartburg district towards Stadtlengsfeld , Dermbach and Kaltennordheim .
Dorndorf was once a railway junction of the Feldabahn , which branched off from the Bad Salzungen – Vacha railway at Dorndorf (Rhön) station. In addition to the Dorndorf train station, there were stops for passenger traffic in the districts of Dietlas and Merkers. Today there is still freight traffic on a section of the former works railway to the Merkers industrial park. The former route to Vacha is used by the wood processing company on the western outskirts of Dorndorf.
