The Cretan vase painting was a regional style of Greek vase painting . It is not to be confused with the Creto-Minoan vase painting .

In contrast to mainland Greece, the Cyclades and the Aegean Sea , knuckle-top jugs were held on during the entire protogeometric period in Crete . Influences from Late and Sub-Mycenaean vase painting are still present, although the influence of Attic ceramics is immense. The decorations on the vessels with people and animals are characteristic of ancient influences. Warriors with square shields are shown, as are hunters, lions, deer, griffins and birds. In Crete, it was very quickly established in the 9th century BC. The geometric style through. Especially in the middle phase he was very much influenced by Attic models. So the Cretan pottery painters adopted the multiple brush attached to a circle. Later they were based more on Corinthian models . Also since the 9th century BC BC, so much earlier than elsewhere in the Greek world, experiments were made with orientalizing motifs . This style is therefore called the "Protogeometric B style". Possibly these experiments were related to immigration from the east to Knossos . However, this experiment lasted only a short time, and a return to a strict geometric style. It was not until the late 8th century that there was a new attempt in the orientalizing style. A special, eclectic form of decor was created on Crete. Floral patterns, ribbons, and tongue patterns interspersed with sub-geometric shapes like concentric circles predominated. Animals, especially birds, are often shown, but less often people. When people appear, they are more like mourners or goddesses, less often mythological scenes . Grave pithoi in Knossos were often painted in polychrome. Light red and blue decor on a white cover was used. Outline drawings were common, but there were also attempts at scratching. The Cretan artists based themselves on many other regional styles. In addition to Attic and Corinthian influences, a Cypriot influence can also be identified. But many developments have sprung from local traditions.
