Kurnool ( Telugu : కర్నూలు Karnūlu [ ˈkʌrnuːlu ], also Karnul ) is a city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh .

Kurnool is 180 km south of Hyderabad on the right bank of the Tungabhadra . The city ( Kurnool Municipal Corporation ) has around 425,000 inhabitants (2011 census) and is the administrative seat of the district of the same name .

Kurnool was the capital of the former state of Andhra (not Andhra Pradesh), which was separated from the state of Madras in 1953. The original name Kandenaolu of the over 2000 year old city was changed to "Kurnool" when it was taken over by the English.
