Kurt Hohensinner , (born May 16, 1978 in Graz ) is a disabled pedagogue , Styrian politician ( ÖVP ), former club chairman of the ÖVP in the Graz City Council and since January 23, 2014, Graz City Councilor for Education , Integration and Sport .

Origin and education

Kurt Hohensinner grew up in his native city of Graz. He graduated from the Caritas School for Social Professions (BMS) in Graz, the educational institute for curative education in Graz and is a qualified disabled pedagogue. Since 2001 he has been an employee in the volunteer management of Lebenshilfe Graz and the surrounding area - Voitsberg and its coordinator. In addition, he completed the health and social management course under the scientific direction of Klaus Zapotoczky, which he completed in January 2011 with the title Master of Business Administration (MBA). His master's thesis is entitled Voluntary Engagement in the Social Sector .

Political career

Hohensinner began his political career as chairman of the Grazer Schülerunion (1996–1998) and as chairman of the Styrian Students' Union (1998–2000). He also served as a board member of the “Grazer Stadtidee” (2000–2007), board member of the AFA Graz “Academic Forum for Foreign Policy” (2003–2008), chairman of the Young People's Party in Graz (2005–2011) and since 2002 chairman of the dormitory operator SFS ". Graz City Council

Since January 21, 2013, Hohensinner was the chairman of the ÖVP in the Graz municipal council. His main focus of work as a local council was creating better conditions for people with disabilities to enable them to lead a self-determined life , and various social and youth issues.

Graz City Council

Kurt Hohensinner, 2014

At the municipal council meeting on January 23, 2014, Hohensinner was elected and sworn in as the successor to Detlev Eisel-Eiselsberg with the votes of all parties as the new incumbent City Councilor for Education, Integration and Sport. After the municipal council election in February 2017 - which was a great success for the ÖVP - Kurt Hohensinner took over the areas of social affairs, senior citizens, youth and family in addition to his previous duties.

Hohensinner's political goal as a city councilor is to make Graz the city of education in Austria with innovative and scientifically evaluated concepts as well as a modern infrastructure that above all keeps the curiosity and motivation of teachers and learners glowing. Education should take place in all areas of life with the help of a constructive and young policy. Integration can only succeed through education in all areas of life. Top athletes need a good team to be successful - from coach to mental trainer. Sports spirit means team spirit - also in popular sports in Graz.

In connection with his function as a city councilor and the associated political responsibilities, Hohensinner is particularly involved in the following areas: education strategy, school expansion, flexible childcare, language support, integration work, new ways of helping the disabled (person-centered support), modern approaches in social policy, sports promotion, Expansion of the sports infrastructure, Teacher's Award and projects for young Graz.

Other political projects and issues

Kurt Hohensinner's further political ideas are timeshare offices, job tickets and inexpensive year-round network cards for public transport, fair community apartments, start-up apartments for young people, liability and accident insurance for all volunteers , enabling citizens to participate in community council meetings and "room for young people". He implemented and implemented free WiFi in the center of Graz, "Citybeach Graz", the Graz Youth Council "ProACT", the transport association afternoon education card, the "Children's Redoute" in the Graz Opera , a liability and accident insurance for all Graz volunteers, a volunteer fire brigade for Graz (founded in September 2008), new swimming pool tariffs and the mobility check .

Initiator of the Graz miniatures

A special facility and attraction, which also go back to an idea by Kurt Hohensinner, are the three-dimensional tactile models of the so-called Graz miniatures. These detailed sculptures, mostly made of bronze, represent miniature models of various Graz sights (the clock tower , the opera, the Murinsel , the Kunsthaus and the town hall ), created for visually impaired and blind people as part of the “Understanding Culture” project. The five miniatures, with which people with visual impairments - but also all children - can better grasp the respective building, were realized with the exception of the town hall miniature by Christian Fuchs (Organic Form Productions). The miniature town hall comes from the Linz artist Günther Knoll. The models are positioned in front of or in the depicted cultural buildings, but those of the Kunsthaus and the clock tower are not aligned to the north . The disabled pedagogue and “Graz miniature idea bringer” Hohensinner visited California's Disneyland in 2000 as part of an internship in the USA with a group of disabled people . There Mickey Mouse , Donald Duck and their friends are made visible to blind people through small plastic dolls . The Disney sights were made available to the group of visually impaired people as wooden miniatures (tactile models) for "understanding".

City councilor Hohensinner hopes that tactile models of the Graz country house and the Graz cathedral can also be realized in the future .
