Lübeck Council 1535

The council of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck in 1535, the end of the Wullenwever period in Lübeck.

Lübeck 1535

On July 7, 1535, an imperial executive mandate arrived in Lübeck, which demanded the restoration of the old order and the reinstatement of Nikolaus Brömses within 45 days. Some of the gentlemen who had come to the council from the 64 committee gave up their office in the following weeks. For a long time, however, a large part of the citizens and also the councilors were convinced by Wullenwever that this did not mean his resignation. It was not until August 26, 1535, the last day before the expiry of the imperial ultimatum, that he resigned, under pressure from the Hanseatic League, together with the citizens' committee and everyone else who had come from this group to the council. After Brömse's return and his reinstatement as mayor of Lübeck , the council supplemented itself in the traditional way in September. Karsten Timmermann, who had resigned, was immediately re-elected. Two more of the former "note lords", as those who were drawn into the council in 1531 and 1533 respectively, were accepted again in the following years.
