LANIS Bund
LANIS Association is the La ndschafts- and N aturschutz in formations s ystem of federal esamtes for Nature Conservation (BfN). It is tailored to the needs of landscape management and nature conservation in the Federal Office.
It was designed by what was then the Federal Research Institute for Nature Conservation and Landscape Ecology (BFANL) between 1974 and 1980 and is operated by what is now the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) for internal use.
The main components are a meta information system for locating LANIS Bund objects, which enables searches for subject, spatial and time references as well as XML interfaces to the databases and specialized information systems within the BfN. The metadata component is largely based on the principle of the public environmental data catalog . LANIS-Bund thus enables comprehensive research in numerous BfN information stocks.
The general environmental thesaurus of the Federal Environment Agency and other nature conservation-specific microthesauri are used as a technical reference . The technical reference enables research in a defined set of words that is structured hierarchically and thus also realizes research according to higher-level, subordinate or similar terms. The background of the spatial reference is both geotopographical basic information and subject-specific protected area information such as national parks , nature reserves or landscape protection areas . The spatial reference represents their spatial relationships.
Other BfN databases are queried dynamically via XML interfaces. A butterfly database, map documentation and a prototype digital image archive are currently integrated. The research results are service-oriented, geographical information for example in a mapping service. LANIS-Bund meets the information needs of BfN employees for nature conservation information in order to fulfill their official duties and is permanently maintained and further developed.
