The 1987 film La Bamba tells the life story of the musician Ritchie Valens , who had great hits with the songs Donna and La Bamba and who died in a plane crash at the age of 17.
action
The focus of the film is Ritchie Valens ' rise, his love for Donna, to whom he dedicated his big hit, and his conflicts with his alcoholic half-brother, Bob, who has trouble coping with Ritchie's great success.
Just as Ritchie's career seems unstoppable and he is making plans to marry Donna, he is killed along with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper in a plane crash (which is not shown in the film). His family heard the tragic news on the radio.
criticism
La Bamba was well received by film reviews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, 96% of the 28 reviews evaluated were positive. The corresponding score at Metacritic is 68 based on 12 evaluations.
background
The film team worked closely with Ritchie Valens ' family. Some of the family members, like Ritchie's mother Connie Valenzuela, played small roles in the film.
The scene with Lou Diamond Phillips getting on the plane was interrupted several times by Ritchie Valens' real sister (Connie Lemos), who was on the set and was only 6 years old when Valens died. She fell around Phillips' neck and shouted: "Don't go Ritchie! Please don't get on the plane! Why did you have to die?" (Eng. "Don't go Ritchie! Please don't go on the plane! Why did you have to die?") Phillips had become Ritchie for her, as she later confirmed the incident herself.
Film music
The soundtrack for the film was a huge commercial success. The theme song La Bamba , which had been a hit with Ritchie Valens in 1958, was re-recorded by Los Lobos , taking it to number 1 in the US and UK.
