On Tortuga there is a small natural runway for bush planes; this is mostly used by Venezuelans who take a weekend trip there by private plane.

In spring 2020, the island hit the headlines when the cruise ship RCGS Resolute collided with a patrol boat of the Venezuelan Navy near Tortuga on March 30, 2020 . The Resolute, designed for driving in ice, survived the collision almost unscathed. The patrol boat sank, but the crew managed to save themselves.
