The RCGS Resolute is a cruise ship operated by the Canadian shipping company One Ocean Expeditions. Until 2018, the ship had been used as the Hanseatic for 25 years by the shipping company Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten, mainly for expedition trips.

history

Construction and commissioning

The Hanseatic was initially under the name Society Explorer for the Discoverer shipping company in Bremen as hull number 306 on the Finnish shipyard Finnyards in Rauma on 3 September 1990 to set keel . The launch took place on January 5, 1991. The ship was completed in June 1991, but the shipping company was unable to take it over due to financial problems. The new building was delivered to Society Adventurer Shipping Co. in June 1991. The ship was classified by Germanischer Lloyd with "+ 100 A5 E4 with freeboard 2,106 m, Passenger Ship with Cabins, IW ERS P5D11". On March 23, 1993, the ship, which never sailed under its original name, was renamed Hanseatic and christened by the then Tagesschau spokeswoman and presenter Dagmar Berghoff . The owner was Günter Powalla . Then the Hanseatic was taken over by the organizer Hanseatic Tours in bareboat charter . Until September 2018, the ship sailed under the flag of the Bahamas with home port Nassau .

On March 27, 1993, the Hanseatic left for its maiden voyage , which led from Hamburg to Seville . When Hanseatic Tours was taken over by Hapag-Lloyd in 1996 , the ship's name and, for the time being, the chimney painting were retained at the owner's request, but this was later changed.

The Hanseatic was used worldwide for expedition cruises. Thanks to their small size, rivers such as the Amazon can also be navigated. Due to its classification, the ship is particularly suitable for trips to the Arctic (including the Northwest Passage ) and Antarctica . On August 27, 2014, the Hanseatic under Captain Thilo Natke advanced on the Northeast Passage to a distance of around 480 kilometers from the North Pole; it came to a north position (85 ° 41 'N), which until then had only been reached by icebreakers, thus setting a world record. In September 2016, the ship passed through the Northeast Passage for the second time. The charter between the owner and Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten ended at the end of September 2018, the last cruise reached Hamburg on September 30, 2018.

At the beginning of October 2018 the ship was handed over to One Ocean Expeditions in Hamburg and renamed RCGS Resolute . The ship, which was brought under the Portuguese flag, was then converted by Blohm + Voss . The name of the ship refers to HMS Resolute and the place named after this ship Resolute Bay ; "RCGS" stands for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. As of November 16, 2018 was the RCG Resolute One Ocean Expeditions and used by Columbia Cruise Services, a subsidiary of Columbia Shipmanagement , bereedert . In October 2019 the ship was arrested in Buenos Aires due to unpaid bills and only released again in March 2020. As a result of the operator's bankruptcy, the ship is scheduled to be auctioned on Curaçao at the end of June 2020. [outdated]

Incidents

Previous incidents

On August 29, 1996, the Hanseatic ran in the Northwest Passage on a field of scree lying just below the surface of the water. The damaged ship called the port of the Canadian city of Halifax for repairs.

On July 13, 1997, the Hanseatic ran aground in Hinlopenstrasse ( Spitzbergen ). The ship was evacuated and towed free again. After an examination of the trunk, the journey could be continued.

On December 15, 2002, the Hanseatic was hit by a wave off the coast of New Zealand . A window in the bridge was dented and electrical systems were damaged.

On August 21, 2005, the Hanseatic ran aground near the island of Lurøy off the Norwegian coast. A hole was torn in the hull. The passengers were brought to Bodø by tender boats . However, the ship remained stable and could reach the port of Bodø under its own power.

Incident off Venezuela

The Venezuelan patrol boat Naiguatá GC-23 , which sank on March 30, 2020 after a collision with the RCGS Resolute

The RCGS Resolute was off La Tortuga for maintenance on March 30, 2020 . Shortly after midnight, the patrol boat Naiguatá (GC-23) approached the Venezuelan Navy and asked them to call at the port on Isla Margarita . There are contradicting statements from Venezuela and the Canadian shipping company and the Hamburg-based management about the further course of the incident. According to the Venezuelan side, the ship was in Venezuelan waters . However, according to management press releases , the RCGS Resolute was approximately 13 nautical miles off Tortuga in international waters . The patrol boat fired shots and then rammed the cruise ship to starboard . On the other hand, from Venezuela's point of view, the RCGS Resolute rammed the Naiguatá GC-23 . A published video shows only a brief phase of the action.

In the collision, the RCGS Resolute suffered no serious damage due to its strong hull armor against sea ice , but the patrol boat leaked and sank. The RCGS Resolute shipping company stated that the crew had notified the MRCC Curaçao and stayed for an hour near the sinking ship to rescue any shipwrecked people. The 44 crew members of the Naiguatá were by the Venezuelan Coast Guard salvaged . Then the RCGS Resolute set course for Willemstad ( Curaçao ), where it has since been arrested. According to the Venezuelan naval command , the crew of the RCGS Resolute failed to perform rescue operations and quickly left. From Venezuela, mercenaries and war material for an attack on military facilities were suspected on the cruise ship . President Nicolás Maduro called the incident an "act of terrorism and piracy". The shipping company rejected the suspicion. According to Venezuela's lawyer Berti Braam, crew members allegedly testified in court on Curaçao that the incident occurred in Venezuelan waters. The admission can also be heard in radio communications between the two ships published by the Venezuelan Navy. This was preceded by diplomatic disputes with Portugal, which Juan Guaidó recognized as President of Venezuela. The ship sails under the Portuguese flag.

After that, the ship was set in the port of Willemstad, where an international Seeamtsverfahren by evaluating electronic charts and the voyage data recorder of the RCG Resolute to clarify why the Naiguatá GC-23 sank.

On 22 June 2020, the ship was supposed to be in Curacao for 600,000 $ auctioned.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by two MaK - diesel driven type 8M453, each with 2,940 kW of power. The motors act on two variable pitch propellers via reduction gears . Two shaft generators driven by the main engines and two generators driven by MaK diesel engines of the type 6M332 are available for power generation. An emergency generator was also installed.

The hull of the ship is reinforced with ice . It meets the requirements of the highest Finnish-Swedish ice class 1A Super and is therefore an ice breaker up to an ice thickness of 1 meter.

The ship is equipped with 92 outside cabins in seven categories, most of which are located amidships and in the bow area (“Explorer deck”). The four suites are located on the “bridge” deck. The main restaurant “Marco Polo” is located in the stern of the deck of the same name. The "Explorer Lounge" above is equipped with a dance floor and a small stage. For landings and excursions in shallow waters a total of 14 motorized stand inflatable boats of the type Zodiac Mark V HD with Yanmar -Außenbordmotoren available. From 2015, the ship's Zodiac fleet was converted to electric motors from the manufacturer Torqeedo .

Trivia

During their assignment as Hanseatic , passengers were able to visit the engine room as part of a guided tour. With a few rare exceptions, the bridge was also accessible to passengers.
