The old lady and the doves is an animated short film by Sylvain Chomet from 1997. It was made in a French-Canadian-Belgian-British co-production.

action

In Paris, a fat tourist family takes a picture in front of the Eiffel Tower . When the very overweight son of the family drops a bag of popcorn , an extremely emaciated gendarme reaches into the bag before running away. He goes to the park, where he sees fat pigeons, which are all heading for one place. Here an old woman feeds the birds with little cakes. The gendarme's mouth is watering. At night he dreams that the old woman brings a suckling pig into the park and that he begins to eat a pig like a pigeon before being pecked to death by life-size pigeons. He wakes up screaming, but the dream has given him an idea.

The next day he follows the woman to her apartment. The following night he built himself a huge pigeon head from the plumage of a real pigeon that fell at his feet not far from the woman's apartment, and put on gloves made of feathers. He goes to the old woman's apartment, who sees him as a pigeon and starts to feed. Every day the slender gendarme goes to the old woman, meets a neighbor in the hallway and eats his fill at the old woman's. It gets thicker and thicker until it barely fits through the doors. At Christmas he dines with the woman as usual, but notices that he is getting increasingly drunk. She added whiskey to the meal. In an adjoining room, the man sees the old woman sharpening huge poultry shears. At her side is the neighbor, whom the man saw every day in the hallway - she is disguised as a cat and is viewed by the old woman as a pet . The man wants to flee, but the old woman has locked the front door. The woman chases the man with poultry shears, who at the end jumps out of the window and can drag himself home through the snow.

A tourist video later shows the gendarme again spindly; he picks grains with the pigeons not far from the Eiffel Tower.

production

After graduating from Angueleme in 1987, Chomet first worked as a comic and advertising artist in London and returned to France in 1990. At the Festival d'Animation Annecy he was so impressed by the short animated film Creature Comforts that he began work on his debut film La vieille dame et les pigeons in 1991 , which he finally completed in 1996. The background drawings for the film are from Nicolas de Crécy , with whom Chomet had studied.
