Lanaken ( Limburgish : Lôneke ) is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 25,841 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).
location
Lanaken is located in eastern Belgium on the left bank of the Meuse , which here forms the border with the Netherlands . In addition to the main town, the municipality consists of the districts Gellik , Neerharen , Veldwezelt , Smeermaas and Rekem .
The city center of the Dutch city of Maastricht is only five kilometers southeast, Hasselt 22 kilometers west, Liège 30 kilometers south.
Infrastructure
The nearest motorway exits are in the east near Maastricht on the Dutch A2 / E 25 motorway , in the north near Maasmechelen on the Belgian motorway A2 / E 314 and in the west near Bilzen on the A13 / E 313 .
The nearest regional train stations are located in Maastricht, Bilzen, Genk and Hasselt .
Maastricht Aachen Airport in the Dutch municipality of Beek and Liège Airport in Bierset (municipality of Grâce-Hollogne ) are the nearest regional airports and Brussels National in Zaventem is an international airport.
history
- The picturesque town of Oud-Rekem was the seat of the imperial county of Rekem (Reckheim) until 1791. Here you can see the Renaissance castle of the Counts d'Aspremont-Lynden, restored in the 1990s, which had served as a psychiatric clinic since the 19th century.
- The former Cistercian Hocht Abbey, founded in the 12th century, is located near Lanaken- Neerhaaren .
- Pietersheim, an 80-hectare public park with the former castle of the Belgian branch of the family of the Princes of Merode , which now serves as a hotel, and the ruins of a medieval castle.
Zangersheide
The Zangersheide stud is located in Lanaken-Neerhaaren. This was founded in the 1970s by Léon Melchior (1926–2015), continued by Judy-Ann Melchior and forms the center of the breeding of the Zangersheid horse . International show jumping tournaments and the world championships for young show jumpers are held here. Léon Melchior was an honorary citizen of the city of Lanaken.
