Lommel is a city in the Flemish region in Belgium with 34,079 inhabitants (at January 1, 2019). Lommel belongs to the province of Limburg .

The city is located south of Eindhoven , right on the border with the Netherlands . In the south it touches the military training area Kamp van Beverlo . The Kempen Canal runs north through the municipality, and in the western district of Blauwe Kei the branch canal Kanaal naar Beverlo branches off, ending in the garrison town of Leopoldsburg . Lommel was the starting point for Operation Garden in 1944 . It is the location of the Lommel military cemetery , the largest German military cemetery from the Second World War in other European countries.

Sporting events

The European Masters, a snooker tournament of the Snooker Main Tour , has been taking place in Lommel since 2017 .

Bus accident in 2012

On March 13, 2012 at around 9:15 p.m., a bus accident occurred in a section of the A9 tunnel in Sierre , in which 22 children and 6 adults died, including 15 children and 2 supervisors from the municipal primary school 't Stekske in Lommel-Kolonie, 7 Schoolchildren and 2 supervisors from the St. Lambert School in Heverlee and 2 bus drivers. The funeral service took place in the sports hall on March 21, 2012.
