Lee Quiñones

Lee Quiñones (* 1960 in Ponce ), known as LEE, is a Puerto Rican - American graffiti and hip hop artist.

life and work

"Lee" George Quiñones was born to Puerto Rican parents in Ponce born and grew up in the Lower East Side in Manhattan on. In 1974 he began spraying large graffiti on the New York City subway . Lee Quiñones painted over wagons and even entire subway trains in a spectacular way. Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat were influenced by his graffiti.

Under the direction of Charlie Ahearn , Lee Quiñones stars in Wild Style , a hip-hop film with members of the spray group The Fabulous 5ive . Quiñone starred in the films New York City Girl (1982) and Susan… Desperately Wanted (1985) by Susan Seidelman . Also in films with Laurence Fishburne , Rosie Perez and Fred Durst .

After initially illegal spraying activities, Quiñones began to work on a legal, commercial basis. Quiñones later made the step into renowned galleries and museums by using canvas and metal as image carriers . In 1982 Quiñones exhibited at documenta 7 in Kassel.
