Lee John Westwood OBE (born April 24, 1973 in Worksop , Nottinghamshire ) is an English professional golfer on the PGA European Tour .

Amateur career

Westwood began playing golf at the age of 13, which is relatively late for future professional tournament players. But only two years later he was the youth champion of Nottinghamshire . In 1990 he won his first amateur tournament, the Peter McEvoy Trophy , then in 1993 the British Youth Championship and in the same year he became a professional golfer .

Professional career

Westwood's first victory on the European Tour was the 1996 Volvo Scandinavian Masters , soon followed by the Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters in Japan . His run of success continued in 1997 with the defense of this Japanese title win, followed by victories at the Benson & Hedges Malaysian Open , the important Volvo Masters in Spain and finally Westwood defeated the great Greg Norman in the playoff of the Holden Australian Open . He also played in the Ryder Cup with Nick Faldo in what was, for him, an extraordinary year. Nevertheless, Westwood was able to even surpass these successes in the next few years and had its climax in the 2000 season when he clearly dominated the European Tour with six tournament wins.

At the 2004 Ryder Cup, Westwood punched the putt that secured the cup's defense and with his 4½ out of 5 possible points was the best individual player in this historic 18½ to 9½ triumph for the European team. In 2006 he was taken by captain Ian Woosnam as captain's pick in the team that could defend the cup with the same result. Westwood has been on the European team ten times in a row (since 1997).

In 2009, Westwood was more successful than ever, especially in the second half of the year. At both the British Open and the PGA Championship , he was close to his first major win. In both tournaments he finished third. This year he was victorious in the final tournament of the European Tour in November. With 23 under par and six strokes ahead, he won the so-called Dubai World Championship . 4.2 million euros in prize money also meant victory in the money list, the Race to Dubai . The double triumph in the final tournament and in the annual ranking of the European Tour was only achieved by two other players, most recently Colin Montgomerie in 1993. "My success in 2000 was a high point of my career. I was still very young and green behind the ears. Me had gone through four tough years in the meantime and am very happy that I was able to come back, "said Westwood after the win.

In total, Westwood has won 23 events on the European Tour and had other tournament successes in North America , Africa , Asia and Australia .

On November 1, 2010, he temporarily took the lead in the golf world rankings for the first time .

Private

Lee Westwood has been married to Laurie Coltart, sister of the Scottish Ryder Cup player Andrew Coltart , since 1999 . The couple has two children, Samuel Bevan (* 2001) and Poppy Grace (* 2004). Westwood is a huge football fan and supporter of Nottingham Forest .
