Lee Woon-jae (born April 26, 1973 in Cheongju , South Korea ) is a South Korean football goalkeeper . His current club are the Suwon Samsung Bluewings in the Korean K-League .

Career

His first of a total of 132 A-internationals he played against the USA on March 5, 1994 , the game ended in a 0-1 defeat for South Korea. At the 1994 World Cup , he was in the squad of the Korean team and was substituted on in the 2: 3 defeat against Germany in the second half. Between 1995 and 1999 Lee was no longer called up to the national team, which is why he missed the Asian Cup 96 and the World Cup 98 .

At the 2000 Asian Cup , Lee led his team to the semi-finals. The greatest success was then celebrated at the 2002 World Cup , when the then co-host South Korea reached the semifinals. In the quarter-finals against Spain, Lee saved Joaquín Sánchez's penalty and helped his side advance. He was also the goalkeeper of the South Korean team at the 2004 Asian Cup and the 2006 World Cup .

In 2007 Lee Woon-jae was third with South Korea at the Asian Cup, the Koreans had to play three penalty shootouts in the knockout round. In the quarter-finals against Iran , Lee was able to save two penalties and secure a place in the semi-finals, but there they lost against Iraq 3: 4 on penalties. The game for third place against Japan was again won 6: 5, as Lee was able to parry a penalty. After the championship, it became public knowledge that Lee and three other teammates went to a bar during the tournament and consumed alcohol there. After this incident he was suspended from the national team for a year.

At the 2010 World Cup he was in South Korea's squad, but was not used there. After the World Cup, he ended his international career, playing his last game on August 11, 2010 against Nigeria .
