Lengwitz

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Lengwitz is one of the three source brooks of the Ilm in the Thuringian Forest near Ilmenau . It is about five kilometers long.

course

The Lengwitz rises on the Rennsteig near Allzunah and then flows north through the Gläsertal . Here it takes the Häder from the right and the Göpfersbach from below at the mass mill from the left. From the Massenmühle, in addition to the Allzunah – Stützerbach road, the Rennsteigbahn in the Lengwitz valley runs along. This is followed by a widening of the Lengwitz valley, in which the village of Stützerbach developed. Not far below the village, Lengwitz, Freibach and Taubach unite to form the Ilm.

Concept history

The name Lengwitz comes from Slavic and was probably the original name of the entire Ilm. Here the Längwitzgau extended from the Rennsteig to Kranichfeld . Various names still remember this today, such as a former suburb of Arnstadt on the road into Längwitzgau, which was also known as Längwitz .

additional

Until 1945 the Lengwitz formed the state border between Prussia and Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach and the state of Thuringia . That is why the village of Stützerbach was divided into two states along the river until 1945. The eastern, Weimar side was opposite the western Prussian side.
