Leo Joseph Boivin (born August 2, 1932 in Prescott , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player , coach and scout , who played 1204 games for the Boston Bruins , Toronto Maple Leafs , Detroit Red during his active career between 1952 and 1970 Wings , Pittsburgh Penguins and Minnesota North Stars played in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . He was also head coach of the St. Louis Blues twice in the 1970s , before he was honored for his services to ice hockey when he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986 .

Career

Boivin began playing ice hockey on frozen lakes and rivers at the age of seven. After he had spent his junior years between 1948 and 1951 at the Inkerman Rockets and Port Arthur Bruins , with whom he had participated a total of three times in the Memorial Cup , the defender switched to the professional field at the age of 20.

After the Toronto Maple Leafs had acquired his transfer rights together with Fernie Flaman , Kenny Smith and Phil Maloney from the Boston Bruins in exchange for Bill Ezinicki and Vic Lynn in November 1950 , Boivin made his debut in the course of the 1951/52 season , which he mainly played with spent the Pittsburgh Hornets in the American Hockey League , for Toronto in the National Hockey League . Meanwhile, he won the Calder Cup with the Hornets in the AHL . From 1952, the defender was an integral part of the Maple Leafs squad for the following two seasons. As one of the best defensive defenders in the NHL, however, the Boston Bruins brought him back in November 1954 in exchange for Joe Klukay . Boivin helped the Bruins to two Stanley Cup finals in 1957 and 1958 .

Ultimately, Boivin stayed in Boston until February 1966 - the last three years of which as team captain - before he was given to the Detroit Red Wings together with Dean Prentice in exchange for Gary Doak , Ron Murphy , Bill Lesuk and later Steve Atkinson . With Detroit he reached the Stanley Cup finals for the third time in the same year . However, the title won again from. By the selection by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL Expansion Draft in 1967 , the defensive player left the Red Wings after one and a half seasons and was active from the beginning of the 1967/68 season to January 1969 for the newly founded franchise . He then worked for the Minnesota North Stars , who had acquired him in exchange for Duane Rupp , until he retired in the summer of 1970 . He ended his active career at the age of 38.

After his career, Boivin stayed with the Minnesota North Stars and worked as a scout for two years . For the 1972/73 season he began to work as a coach after he had been signed by the junior team of the Ottawa 67’s from the Ontario Hockey Association . There was also active for two seasons before he switched back to the NHL as a scout. With the beginning of the game year 1974/75 he worked for the St. Louis Blues . In addition to his scouting post, he also took over the post of assistant coach under head coach Lynn Patrick at the beginning of the following season . He inherited this in the course of the season, but retired with the team after successful qualification in the preliminary round of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1976 . He then gave up the post, but returned to St. Louis at the beginning of the 1977/78 season. His second term ended prematurely with the dismissal after 54 games. Boivon then retired from ice hockey for several years.

After he was honored with the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1986 , the Canadian worked again in the 1986/87 season as a scout for the Hartford Whalers in the NHL. He filled the same post again in the 1989/90 season .
