Leonard Orban (born June 28, 1961 in Brașov ) is a Romanian politician.

After studying mechanical engineering at the University of Brașov from 1981 to 1986, he worked in a tractor factory. He also studied management at the Academy of Economics in Bucharest .

Politically active since 1993, in 2001 he became a member of the Romanian negotiating team for EU accession. In December 2004 he became chief negotiator and at the same time State Secretary in the Ministry for European Integration.

On October 30, 2006, Călin Popescu Tăriceanu proposed him as Romania's candidate for the European Commission , Commission President José Manuel Barroso accepted the candidacy. With the approval of the European Parliament , he was Commissioner for Multilingualism from January 2007 to February 2010 .

He was the patron of the large-scale project “Languages ​​without Borders” of the Goethe Institute, which was to run for at least two years from 2008 : with competitions, conferences, literature festivals, documentaries, performance and multimedia projects on multilingualism in politics, science and business.

In 2012, Leonard Orban was Romanian Minister for Europe in the Ponta cabinet .

Leonard Orban is the brother of the liberal politician Ludovic Orban ( PNL ). He is married and has one child.
