The Levant Front ( Arabic الجبهة الشامية, DMG al-Ǧabha aš-Šāmiyya ; English transliteration : al-Jabhat al-Shamiya ; German also: Al-Jabhat al-Schamia ) is an alliance of rebel groups established in December 2014 in the north of the Aleppo governorate in Syria . The Levant Front has not published a political program, but the vast majority of its founding members favor Syria under a Sunni agenda.

history

The establishment of the alliance of Sunni-Islamist groups from the Aleppo area was announced on December 25, 2014.

Just four months later, Sakaria Malahifdschi, head of the political office of the Levantine Front, announced on April 18, 2015 that the alliance would be dissolved due to problems with political coordination. However, military coordination should continue. However, on June 18, 2015, the continuation of the alliance was announced again. The new leader was the former military chief Abu Amr. A joint statement was published at the end of June.

In early 2016, the alliance became embroiled in skirmishes with advancing units of the Syrian government forces, which were advancing north of Aleppo , supported by Russian air strikes . At the same time, Kurdish troops of the People's Defense Units (YPG) attacked the positions on the Levant Front and captured the Menagh military airfield from them on February 11, 2016 .

In August 2016, the Levant Front stated that they wanted to capture Jarabulus from IS before SDF units had the opportunity. To do this, she joined Operation Euphrates Shield as part of the Free Syrian Army .

Founding organizations

The following groups were involved in the founding meeting in December 2014:

At that time, Abdul Aziz Salama was appointed commander-in-chief of the Levant Front and Mohammed Bakkur its military chief.
