The Liebigschule Gießen is a high school named after Justus Liebig in Gießen ( Hesse ).

history

The school was founded in 1837 as one of three provincial schools in the Grand-Ducal Hesse region to meet the new requirements of the industrial age . It has been possible to take the Abitur since 1900 . In 1914 the two branches of school separated, the secondary school  - now the Herderschule Gießen  - and the secondary school . In 1937 it was given the current name Liebigschule (the nickname LIO - Liebigoberrealschule - still refers to it). From 1972 to 2002 it was a cooperative comprehensive school beginning with grade 7. Since 2002 it has been a grammar school again with grades 5 to 13 and 12, respectively. About 1550 students from the city and district of Giessen are taught at the Liebigschule.

In 2012 the school celebrated its 175th anniversary with numerous events such as an anniversary show and a festive ceremony at the Justus Liebig University , at which Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier also expressed his congratulations. As part of the anniversary, the Ziel.175 project was started, which provided 175,000 euros in donations for the construction of an additional cafeteria. The atrium cafeteria has now been set up.

From autumn 2008 to July 2014, the school principal was Carsten Scherlaß. After moving to the Goetheschule Wetzlar in the 2014/15 school year, the deputy headmaster Joachim Sieben took over the provisional management. Dirk Hölscher has been director of the Liebig School since June 2015.

Pedagogical profile

The Liebig School's teaching focuses on music, newer languages, scientific subjects and sports. The school offers additional music and physical education classes in certain years and a wide range of working groups for all students.

After the Liebigschule introduced the shortened eight-year high school period ( G8 ) in 2005, like most Hessian high schools , it returned to the nine-year high school period in 2013.

The work of the school is supported by many sides, such as the alumni association, the Liebigschule music association and the Liebigschule association .

Musical focus

Music is particularly encouraged at the Liebig School. The school has two orchestras, which mainly work on classical music, and several choirs. The (public) orchestra and choir concerts in summer and before Christmas are among the highlights of school life. Chamber music groups complete the offer. The orchestra and choirs regularly organize concert tours and exchange programs with schools in Spain and England. In June 2008 the orchestra of the Liebig School played at the EXPO world exhibition in Saragossa . In addition, the exchange with the County High School in Colchester has become lively again.

The "LieBigBand" represents modern popular music at the Liebig School. Founded by the music teacher Michael Zarniko, it celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2013. The band performs annually on the neighboring Schiffenberg as part of an open-air concert.

Short-term media interest

On September 19, 2006, the Franco-German television broadcaster ARTE reported in a themed evening on Christian fundamentalism that biology classes in two schools in Central Hesse dealt with the theory of evolution as well as the notion of creationism propagated by evangelical circles . The focus of the program was the August Hermann Francke School , a state-recognized Christian private school, and a single teacher from the Liebig School, who, in addition to dealing with the theory of evolution, put creationist approaches up for discussion.

Historical sources

The records of the Oberrealschule (inventory G 53 Oberrealschule Giessen) are now in the Hessian State Archives in Darmstadt . The collection dates back to 1913 and contains over 200 personal files from former trainee lawyers at the school with information on the exams they took, which can provide insights into the biographies of the trainee teachers and the teacher training at the time. The inventory can be viewed on the Internet and researched online.
