Lim Yo-hwan (born September 4, 1980 ), known under the pseudonym Boxer , is a professional computer gamer from South Korea .

Life

Lim is one of the most successful and well-known StarCraft players. His fan club now has over 600,000 people and there is a DVD compilation of his best games that was released in South Korea. Lim gained fame because he was able to dominate professional StarCraft with the Terran race, although the Terrans were considered the weakest race until then. His success earned him the nickname Emperor of Terran among South Koreans . He also had the reputation of being able to win games from a very bad position and had excellent micromanagement , i.e. control of the individual units. On the other hand, his macromanagement (the economy and production of the units) is seen by some commentators as his weakness compared to other top players.

Lim's wish was to become a soccer star, but only until the computer game StarCraft: Broodwar appeared on the market. At the beginning of his career, he was considered very innovative and invented new strategies that have been adopted by many players. Just a year after the famous strategy classic was published, he won the first SBS (Seoul Broadcasting Station) StarCraft Tournament . Within a very short time he became known all over Korea. The victory at the Police Boat Game Conference in 2000 secured him ProGamer status for the first time .

His victories had also caught the attention of the already established professional teams. So he joined under the names Limterran and Limyh Ideal Space , also known under the abbreviation "IS". After he was able to win further tournaments, the first major event came up to the young professional. The World Cyber Games 2001, to which all top international players were invited, such as Grrrr ... , ElkY and V-Gundam . There he was able to triumph over both the French Elky and the Norwegian [GG99] Slayer .

In the first OnGameNet Starleague he competed against one of the strongest zerg of all time, [NC] ... Yellow . After this game, which thousands of Korean fans had seen live, Lim Yo-hwan secured himself the rank of most famous ProGamer in Korea with a surprising 3-2 win over the favorite Yellow.

In another Star League, SKY 2001, boxers fought their way to the final to compete against the famous Protoss player Garimto. However, he lost this game 2: 3. However, the result was not decisive for the crowd. They were thrilled with Lim's victory on the "Silent Vortex" map, which is considered to be very unbalanced as Terrans cannot build rocket towers on the ice and are thus disadvantaged. Despite the loss to Garimto, SlayerS_`Boxer` became even better known than he already was.

He won his first KPGA title in 2002 by beating his rival NC ... Yellow again. Immediately afterwards the World Cyber Games 2002 started. Boxer was able to fight against players like Tom Whittier aka. Froz! , Fredrik Keitel aka. [pG] FiSheYe and again against Hong Jin-ho aka. [NC] ... Yellow prevail. BoxeR was in Group D with sizes like FroZ! , mTw-DIDI8 (who switched to Warcraft  3 and became the most successful Bulgarian national player) and androide. He finished second and freed himself with first place FroZ! from the so-called "Group of Death". The game against DIDI8 gained special importance due to sophisticated strategies and is still considered to be particularly worth seeing today. After the preliminary round he met Yellow again and Boxer was able to win again. On his way to the final, he won against ElkY and Blackman . In the final, [NC] ... Yellow was waiting , who fought his way to the final in the loser bracket. Boxer already had a 1-0 advantage at the start of the game, as he was the winner of the winner bracket and won confidently on the "Hall of Valhalla" card. So SlayerS_`Boxer` was champion in StarCraft: Broodwar at the World Cyber Games.

The SKY event took place immediately afterwards . Boxer made it to the final and lost 3-1 to the up-and-coming Protoss Gamer Park Jung-suk [Oops] Reach . Boxer's father complained to his clan IS after this defeat, but this only resulted in "IS" throwing boxers off the team. A short time later he found refuge in Team Orion , for which he took second place at the KPGA Tour Invite Championship. For the first time he lost against Yellow 3-1; two of the games are particularly worth seeing and were included in the "Pimpest Plays" series.

In 2003, Lim became a KPGA Tour finalist but lost the final. Despite a third place in the Olympus Starleague, 2003 was not a very successful year for boxers, which among other things meant that he was not invited to the World Cyber Games. In 2004 Boxer finished second in the KT-KTF Bigi Premier League and only had to admit defeat to [ReD] NaDa . He changed teams and went to SK Telecom T1, and won the G-Voice Challenge League against (KRQoo) Max , among others . In the EVER Starleague he lost to his long-term student iloveoov in the final and finished second.

At the beginning of 2005 Lim announced his retirement from ProGaming, but came back in the middle of the year to take part in the CKCG 05, in which he finished second because of a loss to [ReD] NaDa. After the 2006 MSL season, Lim officially ended his e-sports career as he was drafted into the military.

Life after military service

Shortly after its basic training, the South Korean Air Force announced that it was building its own team of professional players called the Air Force ACE . The first player was Lim together with the already retired players HOT Forever (Kang Doh Gyung), ChRh (Choi In Kyu) and Clon (Jo Hyung Kun). The team became a basin for the aging stars of the Korean StarCraft scene. In the team league "Proleague" it is a little sensation every time the Air Force team wins a game. Still, Lim had lost little of his genius. To this day, he is the undisputed player with the most pimpest plays , an award for particularly creative play that is given every year by the American StarCraft fansite SCLegacy.

In December 2008 he moved back to his old team SK Telekom T1.

After the successor title Starcraft II appeared in July 2010, Lim switched to this title in October 2010. Linked to this was another departure from his SK Telekom T1 team. With his first participation in the GomTV GSL, the most prestigious StarCraft II tournament, he made it into the semifinals and thus among the top 4. At the beginning of 2011, he founded his own team under the name Slayers . He continued to play actively, but could not continue the great success of his Starcraft: Broodwar time. At the beginning of 2012, Lim resigned as an active player and then worked as a coach and manager for his team.

In August 2012 he switched again to SK Telekom T1, which had meanwhile also switched to Starcraft II. There he is the trainer for Terran players.
