Linda Maxine Godwin (born July 2, 1952 in Cape Girardeau , Missouri ) is a former American astronaut .
education
Linda Godwin graduated from Jackson High School in Jackson , Missouri in 1970 . In 1974 she received a bachelor's degree in mathematics and physics from Southeast Missouri State University . In 1976 she received a Masters and a PhD in Physics from the University of Missouri in 1980 . Godwin also has a pilot's license.
Astronaut activity
In 1980 Godwin came to NASA and worked there in the payload area for space shuttle missions. After unsuccessful applications for astronaut groups 9 and 10, she was selected in June 1985 as an astronaut candidate with the 11th group. Godwin was at times deputy chief astronaut and liaison spokesperson ( Capcom ). She currently works for Flight Crew Operations and is therefore responsible for team planning for future shuttle missions.
STS-37
On April 5, 1991 Godwin started as a mission specialist on the space shuttle Atlantis for her first flight into space . In addition to carrying out numerous experiments, the main payload, the gamma-ray observatory CGRO , was placed in orbit.
STS-59
Godwin had her next assignment on April 9, 1994 as the payload commander on board the space shuttle Endeavor . The so-called Space Radar Laboratory Mission (SRL) was carried out. SRL consisted of three large radars and a carbon monoxide sensor, which were used to study the earth's surface and the atmosphere. Real-time observations of surface features and weather conditions along with over 14,000 photographs helped the researchers evaluate the data.
STS-76
On March 22, 1996 Godwin took off with the space shuttle Atlantis to the Russian space station Mir . On the third rendezvous mission, the astronaut Shannon Lucid was brought to the Mir space station. In addition, supplies, equipment and experimental supplies were delivered. Godwin mounted several experiments on the outside of the station during a six hour spacecraft activity . In the space shuttle, various technological and biological experiments were also carried out in the Spacehab .
STS-108
On December 5, 2001, she flew as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Endeavor to the International Space Station (ISS). STS-108 brought the crew of ISS Expedition 4 to the ISS and picked up the Expedition 3 space travelers again. With the multi-purpose logistics module Raffaello, which Godwin attached to the ISS with the shuttle robot arm, more than three tons of supplies and scientific experiments were brought to the space station. During the twelve-day flight, Godwin also undertook a four-hour spacecraft activity to attach insulating mats to the solar panels.
Private
Linda Godwin was married to astronaut Steven Nagel until his death and has two children and a stepdaughter.
