This list contains well-known personalities who studied, taught or are currently teaching in Ilmenau , although it does not claim to be exhaustive. The list includes both the Technical University of Ilmenau and its predecessors: The Thuringian Technical Center (since 1894) and the Ilmenau Engineering School (from 1926), which was converted into a technical school for mechanical engineering and electrical engineering in 1950 . From this emerged the University of Electrical Engineering in 1953 , which was given the status of a technical university in 1963 and a technical university in 1992.

  • Eduard Jentzen , who founded the Thuringian technical center in Ilmenau in 1894 by moving his technical center from Neustadt-Glewe, was director of the technical center from 1894 to 1903.
  • Georg Schmidt (* 1871; † 1955 in Ilmenau), director of the technical center from 1903 to 1948, saved it from collapse through negotiating skills in 1918, 1923 and 1945. Today a street in Ilmenau is named after him.
