The following list sorts countries and territories according to their total forest area (including primeval forest area) in 2015 in square kilometers . The proportion of wooded areas in the total land area is also given. All data come from the World Bank . The total global forest area was 39,991,336.2 km² (as of 2015) which was 30.8% of the global land area (excluding Antarctica ).

Development of the global forest area

The following list gives an overview of the development of the land area in the 20 countries with the largest land area since 1990. In total, a forest area of ​​1,291,359 km² has been lost since 1990, which corresponds to the total area of Peru or four times the total area of ​​Germany. In some countries, such as Russia , the USA and the People's Republic of China , the forest area increased due to reforestation programs. In Brazil , Indonesia and large parts of Africa, however, an even larger area of ​​forest areas was lost to deforestation.
