List of administrative districts and cities in Saxony
The Free State of Saxony is subdivided into ten administrative districts and three independent cities . This list of administrative districts and independent cities in Saxony gives a general overview of these including their most important data. The currently valid administrative structure came about with the district reform of August 1, 2008 , in which the previous 22 districts and seven urban districts were restructured.
With an area of 18,415.5 square kilometers, Saxony is the tenth largest German state . With a total population of 4,071,971 people (as of December 31, 2019), it is in sixth place. The average population density is 221 inhabitants per square kilometer, which is roughly the national average.
The largest cities in Saxony are the state capital Dresden with 556,780 inhabitants and the trade fair city Leipzig with 593,145 inhabitants.
The most populous area is the Erzgebirgskreis with 334,948 inhabitants, but very few people live in the district of North Saxony . In terms of area, the Bautzen district is the largest with 2,390.7 square kilometers, and the Zwickau district with 949.3 square kilometers is the smallest of the districts of Saxony.
