List of Royal Consorts of Scottish Monarchs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of the Royal Consorts of the Scottish Monarchs chronologically lists all spouses of the Scottish monarchs known to date . The list does not include the Queen Regnant of Scotland (see → List of Rulers of Scotland ), who ruled in their own right , as well as those spouses of the Scottish monarchs who died before their accession to the throne.

The wife of the Scottish King is usually referred to as the Queen Consort or often just as the Queen . Women as ruling queens ( Queen Regnant ) are rarer, which is why there is no fixed designation for the position of a male royal consort . The usual title for the Scottish Queens Consort was Queen consort of Scotland . From 1603 they also carried the title Queen consort of England and Ireland , since from this point on the kingdoms of Scotland and England were ruled in personal union.

With the final amalgamation of England and Scotland in 1707 to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, there are no Scottish, but only British Royal Consorts (see → List of Royal Consorts of British Monarchs ).

list

Little more is known of the royal consorts of the early Scottish monarchs than their existence. The first Scottish queen who can be historically verified with names and dates was Gruoch , who later became known as Lady Macbeth through Shakespeare . Of the twelve on Macbeth following Scottish monarch of their consorts were four either not married or names not known, this includes Lulach (1057-1058), Donald III. (1093-1094; 1094-1097), Malcolm IV. (1153-1165) and Margarete (1286-1290).

list

From 1290 to 1292 and from 1296 to 1306 there were two Interregna between which only John Balliol ruled from 1292 to 1296. His wife Isabella de Warenne probably died before his accession to the throne and is therefore not one of the Queens Consort of Scotland. The same is true of Isabella von Mar , first wife of Robert I (1306-1329), Elizabeth Mure of Rowallan , first wife of Robert II (1371-1390) and Anne Hyde , first wife of James II (1437– 1460).

list

From 1603 the Scottish monarch ruled Scotland and England in personal union and their spouses were henceforth also Royal Consorts of England (for the previous Royal Consorts of England → see: List of Royal Consorts of the English Monarchs ). Wilhelm II. (1689-1702) is not to be counted among the Royal Consorts and accordingly is not listed here, because although he was the spouse of Queen Maria II (1689-1694), daughter of James VII. (1685-1688), together with her and also after her death as King of Scotland .
