The regiments of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg formed a relatively powerful army in the Ancien Régime , which remained independent even in the personal union of the Elector with the Kingdom of Great Britain . The first regiments were usually set up as early as the 17th century in the individual principalities of the Duchy of Braunschweig-Lüneburg . The army, also known colloquially as "Kurhannoversch", was disbanded in 1803 after its defeat in the coalition war against Napoleonic France. A large number of the officers, but also the soldiers, went to Great Britain to continue fighting against Napoléon in the King's German Legion .

Explanation of the system

A master list and numbering of the infantry regiments of the Kur-Braunschweig-Lüneburg army was only introduced in 1783. Even after the numbering was introduced, the addition of the regimental owner's name was common. Previously, the regiments were only named after the head of the regiment. In addition, the year of foundation has been added to the list below. This is intended to facilitate comparability. This numbering consistently follows the Ticino line-ups . If several regiments were founded in one year, Ticino added a second number (e.g. "1686/2" = second Kurhannoversches regiment, which was set up in 1686). This is followed by the names of the regiment chiefs or the name (possibly name of the commander).

Until the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763, the infantry and cavalry regiments of the Electorate of Braunschweig-Lüneburg had only one battalion (instead of normally two) or two squadrons (instead of normally four). After the Seven Years' War several "old" regiments were merged into one larger regiment, but only after an "old" head of the regiment had resigned . Furthermore, the regiments only bore the names of their heads of regiments. A numbering only takes place uniformly according to the master list from 1783, but did not take into account the date of foundation. The letters additions refer to the regiments that were independent until 1763. For the cavalry, no distinction was made between dragoons or cuirassiers in 1783. The cavalry regiments are represented according to the Hans Bleckwenn system . The numbering of 1783 is summarized in an additional section.

Meaning of the characters used: "*" = foundation, "†" = dissolution, ">" = whereabouts, "=" = double function as a standing regiment of an imperial estate.
