List of the best-selling video albums certified by BVMI in Germany
The list of the best-selling video albums certified by BVMI in Germany is an overview of all video albums that have received gold and platinum awards in Germany from the Federal Association of the Music Industry (BVMI). The most successful award-winning work comes from the American dancer Michael Flatley and was published in 1995. His first music film Lord of the Dance has sold over 450,000 copies so far. The oldest award-winning work dates from 1974 and comes from the British rock band The Rolling Stones , whose concert film Ladies & Gentleman: The Rolling Stones was awarded a gold record for the first time in 2010. With over 700,000 video albums sold, German pop singer Helene Fischer is the interpreter with the most certified sales in history, closely followed by Die Toten Hosen (650,000) as well as AC / DC and Andrea Berg (600,000 each).
Notes on interpreting the statistics listed
This list includes artists whose video albums have received a so-called "Music Video Award" from the BVMI. As a representative of the interests of the German music industry, this association has been awarding such certifications for commercially successful video albums since 1991. The record companies concerned must apply for the certifications; the awards are not automatically assigned. According to a guideline dated January 1, 1976, the number of rated sales is determined according to the units sold to GEMA or another collecting society of the authors as domestic sales. These guidelines apply to all awards, not just audio products.
The video albums can be found in the following table in descending order of their certified sales and in ascending order of the year of publication. The table contains information about the titles of the works, the performers, the year of publication (“Jahr VÖ”) and the year of the highest award (“Jahr Ausz.”) And the amount of certified sales with their award level. The list takes into account all types of video formats . In Germany it is common for the sales figures of different video formats of the same work to be added together, so that no awards are made separately for video formats such as Blu-Ray or DVD. Not included in the list are comedy recordings (for this see: List of the best-selling comedy recordings in Germany ) or children's radio plays . The information in the "Certified sales" column is a minimum number of phonograms sold for the respective work. Since there are fixed lending limits for the awards, the actual sales of the respective sound carriers can be somewhat higher - i.e. between the awarded and the next awarding limit. All physical video formats ( Blu-ray , DVD , HD DVD , VHS etc.) as well as video downloads count in the “Music Video Award” category .
Issues and conditions for the award
The "Music Video Award" is given to video albums whose music content is at least 50%. Other categories of video programs such as feature films , documentaries , special interest journalism or programs for children and young people can only be awarded on the basis of these guidelines if the product is based on its program content in accordance with the current "system description of the official charts" of the BVMI is chartable. It is also possible to register for a “Music Video Award” for audio and video carriers that have already been considered for achieving “Gold / Platinum for music products”. One of the problems associated with the award of gold and platinum awards is that only those high-selling audio and video carriers are awarded that have been registered with the BVMI and therefore received gold and / or platinum awards.
Limits to the award of phonograms
In Germany there is a special feature that gold records are awarded again between the platinum awards. Only AMPROFON in Mexico also follows this award system. Usually there are no further awards between the individual platinum records, until a diamond record is awarded. In Germany diamond records are only awarded in certain categories, the "Music Video Award" is not one of them.
With the introduction of the “Music Video Award”, all video products were initially awarded with the same. In 2009 the “Comedy Awards” and the “Kids Awards” for video products were introduced. With their introduction, all video products from these areas were awarded separately with the genre-specific and no longer with the “Music Video Award”. The award limits of all categories for video products are the same.
