Liu Qi (politician)

Liu Qi ( Chinese  刘淇 ; born November 1942 in Wujin , Jiangsu ) is a Chinese communist politician. He was a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China from 2002 to 2012 and was its party secretary in Beijing until July 2012 .

Liu Qi is a professor of engineering and graduated from the Beijing Iron and Steel Institute, now the Beijing University of Science and Technology . From 1968 he worked for the Wuhan Iron and Steel Company before becoming Minister for the Metallurgical Industry from 1993 to 1998. He then moved to Beijing, where he was mayor from 1999 to 2002. In 2007 he also became chairman of the Beijing Organizing Committee of the China Olympic Committee for the 2008 Summer Olympics . In November 2012, he retired from all positions due to age at the 18th CCP Congress.
