Lophophora diffusa is a species of plant in the genus Lophophora from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The species name diffusa refers to the flat humps of the plants.
description
Lophophora diffusa grows individually or forms groups. The soft fleshy and almost spherical shoots are yellow-green and reach heights of growth between 2 and 7 centimeters and a diameter of 5 to 12 centimeters. No ribs are formed. The humps are usually wide and flat. There are no thorns .
The white, sometimes pale pink to yellowish white flowers are between 1.3 and 2.2 centimeters in diameter.
Systematics, distribution and endangerment
Lophophora diffusa is the most southern species of the genus Lophophora . The plants grow on limestone soils in a relatively small area between Vizarron, Bucareli and Toliman in the Mexican state of Queretaro .
The first description as Lophophora echinata var. Diffusa was published in 1944 by Léon Camille Marius Croizat . In 1967 Helia Bravo Hollis raised it to the rank of an independent species. Lophophora diffusa is listed in the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species as a " Vulnerable (VU) ", i. H. classified endangered.
