The Loreley is an excursion ship built in 1995/96 and operated on behalf of the Cologne-Düsseldorf Deutsche Rheinschiffahrt AG . From the 2014 season it will be used primarily for charter and event trips and as a tour ship in the Cologne area. On days with little traffic, the ship is also used in scheduled service between Cologne and Bad Hönningen . The Loreley is the structurally identical sister ship of the Asbach , which also began operations in 1996 under the ship name Marksburg .

history

The Loreley on the move

The passenger ship was built in 1995 and 1996 by the De Hoop shipyard in Rijnwaarden under construction number 366. The keel was laid in November 1995, the launch on June 1st of the following year. The shipyard delivered the ship on June 30, 1996. On July 5th, Kirsten Treibisch christened the ship in St. Goarshausen with the name Loreley . She was the fourth ship of the Köln-Düsseldorfer to be christened with this name. The construction costs amounted to 8 million  Deutschmarks . From July 6th, the shipping company started using the Loreley in scheduled service mainly on the Middle Rhine between Koblenz and Rüdesheim . On September 18, 2003, Harald Schmidt broadcast his eponymous show from on board the Loreley.

In December 2008, the ship was sold to the wholly owned subsidiary KD Europe S.à rl in Luxembourg and then registered in Valletta , Malta in January 2009 . Since the ships of the Cologne-Düsseldorfer cannot reach their home port due to lack of seaworthiness, they are serviced in the Niehler Hafen in Cologne.

incident

  • On September 28, 2003, the ship ran aground on a plan trip from Rüdesheim to Koblenz at extremely low tide at the height of the eponymous Loreley with both drive and steering propellers. Due to the damage, the ship could no longer be maneuvered. After the master was able to reduce the speed using the bow thruster , the Loreley ran ashore at around 15 km / h at river kilometer 553.7. As a result of the impact, 41 of the 349 passengers complained of pain. Five people received inpatient treatment, while outpatient care was sufficient for the others. A technical defect could be ruled out after investigations by the public prosecutor. The shipping company assumed the cause of the accident to be the extremely low water (1.44 m) at the time of the accident. On November 25, 2003, the public prosecutor released the repaired ship. Due to the impact, the ship's bow was so badly damaged that a new bow section had to be manufactured in the De Hoop shipyard , which the Cologne shipyard built in the Mülheim harbor .

Furnishing

Night shot

The Loreley is a three-deck passenger ship with two salons on the closed main deck. With normal seating, there is space on the front main deck 278 and the slightly higher rear main deck, which is equipped with a bar, for 141 passengers. Below this part of the ship is an approximately 1.40 m high storage room for bicycles. The open-air deck, which can be partially covered with an awning, is designed for 150 people. Aft there is a small playground that has been equipped with a slide. In the lower deck, six crew cabins are connected to the bow thruster room on both sides. Adjacent to this is the ship's kitchen from which a staircase leads to the main deck for the staff. The stairs in the central nave give passengers access from the main deck to the adjoining cloakroom, the ship's office and the toilets. Aft, in addition to the engine room, there are also refrigeration and storage rooms, which are connected to the main deck via a further staff staircase. Drinking water, fuel and holding tanks were installed in the space between the lower deck and the ship's floor. All aft areas of the ship can also be reached by people with disabilities via a starboard elevator. The usable area of the ship is around 630 m², the ceiling height is 2.20 to 3 m. The maximum passenger capacity is given as 600 people.

technology

The ship is powered by two 346 kW MAN type D2840LE diesel engines via two Rauma US381 / 1500 Aquamaster rudder propellers . The bow thruster from the Dutch manufacturer De Gerlien van Tiem has a 230 kW MAN drive. The ship is 68.13 m long, 11.40 m wide and 10.30 m high. The draft is given at full load with 1.25 m.
