Charlotta Eva "Lotta" Schelin (born February 27, 1984 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish soccer player . The 1.78-meter-tall striker is the record goal scorer in her country and was voted the most popular soccer player of the year in Sweden . In August 2018, she announced her retirement due to injury.
Career
societies
Lotta Schelin began her career with the Gothenburg suburb Kållereds SK, later she moved to Hällesåker IF. At the age of 15 she developed severe back problems due to a growth spurt , after which the doctors advised her to stop playing football. She ignored medical advice and instead underwent intense strength and muscle building training. About Mölnlycke IF, she moved in 2001 to the first division team Landvetter IF (today Kopparbergs / Göteborg FC ), with whom she reached the cup final in 2002 . A serious injury in August 2002 required an almost one-year forced break. Shortly after her comeback in June 2003, she was nominated for the national team for the first time. In the 2006 and 2007 seasons she was Damallsvenskan top scorer . At the football gala of the Swedish Football Association in November 2006, Schelin was awarded three prizes: footballer of the year (" Diamantbollen "), striker of the year and top scorer.
In summer 2008 Schelin moved from Göteborg FC to Olympique Lyon and won the Champions League with Lyon on May 26, 2011. This title was defended on May 17, 2012 in the Munich Olympic Stadium (2-0 against 1. FFC Frankfurt). In 2013, on the other hand, she lost the Champions League final with Lyon against VfL Wolfsburg , but was able to win the Coupe de France féminine again with Lyon and was Lyons' top scorer in Division 1 Féminine with 24 goals , which Lyon won for the seventh time in a row and set a new record with 132: 5 goals.
At the beginning of 2015, UEFA named Lotta Schelin as one of five “Women's Football Ambassadors”, who are supposed to pass on their experiences to young players in particular.
On June 8, 2016, Schelin announced her move to FC Rosengård .
On August 30, 2018, Schelin announced her resignation due to long-term health problems.
National team
On March 16, 2004, she made her debut for the Swedish national team as part of the Algarve Cup . The opponent was France's selection . On August 28, 2005 she scored her first international goal in a 2-2 win against Iceland in the World Cup qualifier .
With the national team she took part in the European Championship finals in 2005 and 2009 , the Olympic Games in Athens and Beijing , the 2007 World Cup in China and the 2011 World Cup in Germany .
At the World Cup in Germany, she was used in all three group matches and reached the quarter-finals unbeaten with Sweden. In the game against the United States, she was denied a goal because the assistant referee saw her offside. She was named Player of the Game by FIFA. She was also the player of the game in the quarter-finals against Australia . She prepared the 1-0 opening goal by Therese Sjögran in the 11th minute of the game and scored the goal for the 3-1 final score when she ran a back pass from Kim Carroll and played the goalkeeper off. This meant that both the semi-finals against Japan and qualification for the Olympic Games in London were reached . In the semifinals, she was used despite a slight cold, but could not set any countable accents in the game that was lost 3-1. On July 16, 2011, she and the team won the game for third place, in which they scored the opening goal to make it 1-0 in the 2-1 win over France .
On February 29, 2012, Schelin played her 100th international match in the Algarve Cup game against China .
She was in the Swedish squad for the 2012 Olympics , but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against France. She scored two goals in the tournament and is now the best Swedish goalscorer at the Olympic football tournaments with a total of five goals .
After Pia Sundhage took office as the new national coach, she was appointed captain, but shares the position with Caroline Seger . In the first game under Pia Sundhage on October 23, 2012 against Switzerland, she led the "Landslag" for the first time as "Lagkaptener" on the field.
Schelin was in the squad for the 2013 European Championship finals. In the opening game against Denmark , she and her teammate Kosovare Asllani each missed a penalty at a score of 1: 1, so that for the first time the hosts of the finals could not win their opening group game. In the next three games she scored five goals and reached the semi-finals with her team against defending champions Germany , which were lost 0-1.
On October 29, 2014, she scored her 73rd international goal in a 2-1 draw against Germany, making her Sweden's sole record scorer. She exceeded Hanna Ljungberg's previous record . At the 2015 World Cup, she was used in all four games, but could not set accents in any game and was eliminated with her team after a 4-1 defeat in the round of 16 against Germany . As a result, the Swedes also missed direct qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games , but were able to catch up at the qualifying tournament in March 2016. At the tournament in Brazil, where she was used in all six games, she reached the final with her team, which was the first time the Swedes won an Olympic medal. On the way there she scored the “honorary goal” for her team in the group stage in the 1: 5 defeat against Brazil in the 89th minute, thus preventing the Swedes' biggest defeat. With the only victory in the group stage against South Africa, they reached the knockout round as the second-best group third. In this they eliminated defending champions USA and hosts Brazil on penalties, with Schelin being the first female shooter for Sweden and successful in both cases. But they lost the final against Germany with 1: 2.
She was part of the squad for the 2017 European Championship finals, in which she was used in all four of her team's games and scored two goals, but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the hosts and eventual European champions Netherlands. Because of a neck injury she suffered in June 2017, she was only able to take part in pain medication. After that it was no longer used.
End of career
Schelin has suffered from chronic headaches since her neck injury in June 2017. At a press conference in Gothenburg at the end of August 2018, she announced her decision to end her career as a professional athlete.
Personal
In August 2018, shortly after the end of her career, Schelin came out and shortly afterwards married Rebecca Hedin , the press spokeswoman for the Swedish national soccer team . In August 2019 she became the mother of a son.
