Luis Ángel González Macchi (born December 13, 1947 in Asunción ) is a Paraguayan politician and was President of Paraguay from March 28, 1999 to August 15, 2003.

González became Vice-President on March 23, 1999, five days before he became President, through the assassination of the then Vice-President Luis María Argaña and President Raúl Cubas Grau's resignation and flight to Brazil on March 28, 1999.

As president González tried to form a coalition government in order to secure the participation of the big parties and to have the necessary majority of votes for urgent changes, since the economy of Paraguay was ruined by the previous political crises. But in 2000 the radical liberal party left this alliance, and Macchi only led a minority government. Its popularity began to decline, as did the country's economic strength. He survived a first coup attempt in 2000 and an attempt to bring him to justice in 2001. He could hold on to the presidency until the regular end. His successor in the office of President was on August 15, 2003 Nicanor Duarte Frutos .

On December 4, 2006, González was sentenced by a Paraguayan court to eight years in prison and a fine of 750,000 euros for embezzlement running into the millions. González wants to appeal the verdict.
