Lutz Köhler (* 1945 ) is a German conductor and university professor .

Lutz Köhler studied bassoon , piano , composition and conducting at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media . In 1974 he was appointed professor there. From 1999 he was professor for conducting and head of the symphony orchestra at the Berlin University of the Arts . From 2009 he was also professor of conducting at the Escuela Superior de Música de Cataluña in Barcelona . In 2012 he retired and was succeeded by Steven Sloane at the Berlin University of the Arts . From 2014 he has been a substitute professor at the University of Music Freiburg .

Lutz Köhler has conducted the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the Radio Symphony Orchestra Frankfurt am Main and Saarbrücken , the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra and orchestras in several countries in Europe and Asia, in South America, in the United States, in Australia and in New Zealand. He has made guest appearances at the Rheingau Music Festival , the Dresden Music Festival , the Berliner Festwochen , the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad and with the symphony orchestra of the Berlin University of the Arts in the Konzerthaus in Vienna . In 2010 he made a guest appearance at the Lucerne Festival at the invitation of Claudio Abbado , where he also conducted in 2011 and 2012. In Glasgow he was Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama . His repertoire includes works by Georg Friedrich Händel , Robert Schumann , Johannes Brahms , Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy , Anton Bruckner , Modest Mussorgski , Ludwig van Beethoven and Benjamin Britten . With hr-brass, the brass ensemble of the Hessischer Rundfunk , he recorded several CDs, including parts from Carnival of the Animals by Camille Saint-Saëns .

Lutz Köhler is also involved in working with young and youth orchestras. For more than twenty-five years he was director of the European Community Youth Orchestra , for which he continues to work as musical advisor, and has worked for several years with the Vienna Jeunesse Orchestra and with the Spanish youth orchestra Joven Orquesta Nacional de España . He is the advisory board and jury chairman of the ARD international music competition .

Lutz Köhler is an honorary member of the German Music Council and Professor hc at the Latvian Music Academy in Riga.
