Mägo de Oz (often without heavy metal umlaut : Mago de Oz , Spanish: “ The Wizard of Oz ” or “Mago” for short) is a Spanish heavy metal band. Because of the Irish folk elements in their music, it can be described as Celtic Metal . Since her first album there was a contract with the record label Locomotive Records , since Gaia II she has been with Warner Music Group . Over the years the number of band members has increased steadily, currently Mägo de Oz consists of ten musicians .

history

The band was founded in the winter of 1988/89 by the drummer Jesús María "Txus Di Fellatio" Hernández Gil under the name "Transilvania" as a homage to Iron Maiden . Further members were David (bass), Pedro (guitar), as well as the singer and guitarist Juanma. The first studio recordings, which finally found their way as bonus material in 2006 on the compilation "The Best Oz", were made in 1989 and 1992. She had her first appearance in 1992 at a rock festival in Madrid . Due to frequent line-up changes, Mägo de Oz only released their debut album in 1994.

Until 1994 the band consisted of Txus on drums, Mohamed on violin, Salva on bass, lead singer Juanma Rodríguez and Chema, Charlie and Paco on guitars. Charlie left the band in 1994, followed by Chema and Juanma in 1996. José, a trained tenor and singing teacher, took on the lead vocal.

In 2000 the album "Finisterra" was released. The band had one of their first international appearances at Wacken Open Air 2001 and Bang Your Head 2002 in Germany. With the album "Fölktergeist" she released her first live album after eight years. The double DVD "A Costa da Rock" with a report including English subtitles was made on this tour.

In 2007 Patricia Tapia took over the newly introduced part of female singing.

On September 16, 2008, Mägo de Oz released another concert DVD ("Barakaldo DF"), the recordings of which were made in 2006.

At the end of 2010 Mägo de Oz 'tenth studio album came out, which is another sequel to the Gaia saga, entitled "Gaia III: Atlantia".

In October 2011 the band announced the departure of José Andrëa. In 2010 the flautist Fernando Ponce left the band and was replaced by Josema Pizarro. In 2012 keyboardist Sergio Cisneros "Kiskilla" and bassist "Peri" Pedro Diaz left the band. With "Zeta" a new front singer has been found; Fernando Mainer takes over the bass and Javi Diez takes over the keyboard. With this new line-up, the album "Hechizos, pócimas y brujería" was released in 2012, "Illusia" in 2014 and "Finisterra Ópera Rock" in 2015, a new recording of the 2000 album "Finisterra".

Manuel Seoane Ficha has officially been the third guitarist since November 2018, having previously supported the band in the studio with the recording of the album "Ira Dei", which will be released in 2019.

style

Mägo de Oz on June 1, 2008

Most of the texts are in Spanish . Some compilations and singles have pieces in English . The albums mostly follow concepts. So Jesús de Chamberí is about a modern Jesus Christ . The following album, La Leyenda de la Mancha, tells the story of Don Quixote . The story of Finisterra takes place in a technocratic future . The 2003 album Gaia is part of a trilogy that uses a fictional story against the background of the Spanish Inquisition and the conquest of South and Central America to criticize, among other things, the way people deal with nature. Gaia II - La Voz dormida represents the second part of the series, the third album, Gaia III - Atlantia , was released on April 6, 2010. The album Belfast is an exception , on which familiar themes are provided with their own text and old pieces of their own were newly recorded. It also features one of the band's rare English songs with a version of Over the Rainbow .

The music is heavy metal with elements of classical and traditional Spanish and Celtic music or Irish folk , which is why the style is often described as Celtic Metal . The style-defining elements are the violin parts played by Carlos “Mohamed” Prieto since 1992, since 1999/2000 other heavy metal atypical instruments have been represented by Sergio “Kiskilla” Cisneros ( keyboard , accordion ) and Fernando Ponce de León ( flute , bagpipe ).
