About this picture

Mönkebude is a German municipality in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . It is administered by the Am Stettiner Haff office , based in Eggesin , and bears the title “ State-approved resort ”.

geography

Aerial view (facing east)

Mönkebude is located on the southwestern bank of the Szczecin Lagoon in the Haff Coast nature reserve, six kilometers from Ueckermünde . The large forest area of the Ueckermünder Heide begins in the south and west of the municipality . The place is designed like a horseshoe towards the harbor. Mönkebude has two harbors, a fortified port on the beach and a port further east towards Grambin. There are many fishermen's houses in the village, but also quite magnificent farms line the streets. The town's population has risen steadily since the 1990s, with an increase of almost 10% since 1990.

The neighboring communities are Grambin , Leopoldshagen , Lübs and Ueckermünde .

history

Mönkebude is an old Slavic settlement called "Doblowitz" and was first mentioned in 1244 as Mönkebude. The name probably derives from the monks (actually Canons Regular ) of the Norbertine - Monastery Grobe on Usedom ago who had settled there since the 12th century. Barnim I gave the monks the right to fish, hunt and log wood in the lagoon and the surrounding forests in 1243 (Mönche-Bude = house, the monks' booth).

During the Thirty Years' War the place was badly devastated and not repopulated until 1698. In 1777 the post road from Anklam via Mönkebude, Ueckermünde to Stettin was built . In addition to agriculture and fishing, crafts and trade developed in Mönkebude. Later the barge business gained in importance. In 1930 the port was dredged and the beach was washed up. In 1934, the church with tower and belvedere was completed in a simple functional building . The octagonal tower dome is an architectural feature.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent community was incorporated into Grambin.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Mönkebude
Blazon : “Divided by a wave cut of silver over blue; on top of the division between two green pines, the lowest branches of which are facing the house are truncated, a silver house with five black windows, a black doorway, black half-timbering and a black thatched roof; below a silver fish turned left. "

The coat of arms and flag was designed by Gerhard Koggelmann from Sagard and approved by the Ministry of the Interior in 1999 and registered in the coat of arms.

Justification for coat of arms: Coat of arms since 1982, which showed the same symbols, but did not meet the requirements in terms of design. In the coat of arms, the house, the booth, should allude to part of the place name as a speaking symbol. The pines represent the majority of the trees in the wooded area, with the mutilated branches referring to the earlier clearing. With the wave cut the coastal location of the community is to be made clear, with the fish the fishing. The tinging in silver and blue shows that it belongs to the Western Pomerania region.

The beach and harbor were expanded several times and were given their present appearance in the 1990s. There are various craft businesses such as u. a.
