The nature and landscape protection area Mühlmatten west of Hochdorf bei Freiburg is the largest wet meadow area in the Freiburg Bay . It was placed under nature protection in 1998 because of its importance for threatened species. The central nature reserve with 40 hectares is surrounded by a 17 hectare landscape protection area. The field consists of smaller wooded areas and the largest part of brachgefallenem grassland which became the wetland, there are wetlands, sedge vineyards , damp Hochstaudenfluren and reed reeds . In spring, the marsh marigold blooms there , followed by the red-violet purple loosestrife , and the marsh thistle , meadowsweet , sedges and orchids can also be found. Many have been detected in animals and plants, 67 of them are on the red list . In the field there is a green toad population , Eurasian hobby , Stonechat , swamp terror and Zilpzalp have successfully bred, black woodpecker , reed warbler , Large Copper , Bergmolch and Yellow Warbler were observed.

Originally, the area was earmarked for development in Freiburg's land use plan from 1980 and the city had already invested € 7.5 million.

Characteristics

The area was designated as a nature reserve on January 28, 1998 and is managed by the Freiburg Regional Council under the protected area number 3.246. It has an area of ​​40 hectares . This includes the landscape protection area with the identification 3.15.029 and a size of 17 hectares. The following is shown as the protective purpose:

  • The main protection purpose of the nature reserve is the preservation of the largest, still contiguous, humid meadow low in the Freiburg Bay with species-rich wet meadows. Large sedge meadows, moist tall herbaceous vegetation, reeds, damp forests and bushes as well as drier meadows on the edge as a habitat for a multitude of animal and plant species, some of which are threatened in their existence, in various rare and endangered plant communities and communities.
  • The protection purpose of the landscape protection area is to secure the nature reserve from interference from the immediate vicinity and to maintain the small-scale meadow structure there.
