Oxford Painter 1949

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 1949 Oxford Painter was a Greek vase painter who worked in the late 6th century BC. Chr. In Athens worked.

The Oxford painter in 1949 was one of the earliest red-figure vase painters . He was recognized by John D. Beazley as an independent painter personality and named after a lekythos in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford . In addition, due to stylistic similarities with the name vase, only two other works, an oinochoe and a bowl , were assigned to him. Beazley places the Oxford painter in 1949 behind the presumed inventor of the style, the Andokides painter, and Oltos in third place in his chronology of red-figure vase painting and thus ahead of the Goluchow painter and the vase painters of the pioneer group . So it must have been around the year 530 BC. BC or a little later have been active. Some researchers such as Dyfri Williams assume that it may not have been the Andokides painter, but the poor quality painter from Oxford in 1949 or, alternatively, the painter of the Vatican rider who invented the new style, which is not in Andokides' workshop , but the place of origin of the new style would be to be found in the workshop of the otherwise adventurous and bustling Nikosthenes .
