Mamoudou Athie (born July 25, 1988 in Nouakchott , Mauritania ) is a Mauritanian -American actor . He gained fame primarily through his roles in the series The Detour and Sorry for Your Loss .

life and career

Mamoudou Athie was born in the capital of Mauritania, in northwestern Africa, as the son of a diplomat who worked for the foreign ministry there. The father was forced to receive political asylum in the United States because he spoke out against human trafficking in his home country. He moved to the States with his son and two older sisters, where they settled in the city of New Carrollton , Maryland . At 17 he moved to New York City . It was through one of his sisters that he discovered his interest in acting, while she lost interest in it instead. After graduating from high school, he first attended the William Esper Studio and then the Yale School of Drama .

In 2015 he was seen for the first time in front of the camera in a small role in the film Experimenter - The Stanley Milgram Story . In 2016 he played the DJ Grandmaster Flash in a supporting role in the series The Get Down . The series was discontinued after only one season produced. In 2017 he was cast as Basterd in a larger role in the music film Patti Cake $ - Queen of Rap . For the film he sang the song Wake Up, Sheep! , although he has no particular musical talent. In the same year he was also seen as Jared in the science fiction film The Circle and played the role of Virgil in the film Unicorn Store , the directorial debut of actress Brie Larson . In the series The Detour , he appeared in the second season in the role of Carl . In 2018 Athie starred in the biopic The Spitzenkandidat as AJ Parker in a central supporting role and also took on a leading role as Matt Greer in the series Sorry for Your Loss . He played the role until 2019.

In 2020 Athie appeared in a supporting role in the thriller Underwater and also played the lead role of Elijah , who wants to become a master sommelier , in the film drama Uncorked , which was released in March on streaming service provider Netflix . In 2021 he is slated to take on a major supporting role in Jurassic World: Dominion .
