production

Back in 2006, Baz Luhrmann had the idea for a series or film on the subject of hip hop . After around ten years of development, the series was finally announced in February 2015. Due to difficulties with the shooting process, production was delayed so that initially only six of the twelve planned episodes were shot and published. In addition, the production budget was significantly exceeded. With a total budget of $ 120 million for the first season and an estimated production cost of $ 7.5 million per episode, it is Netflix's most expensive in-house production to date.

When selecting the actors, Luhrmann mainly relied on as yet unknown newcomers in order to be able to present a true and credible picture of the time as possible. In order to bring the origins of hip-hop closer to the performers, Grandmaster Flash , Kurtis Blow and Nas were brought on board.

reception

After the first six episodes were released, the series received both very good and very bad reviews. Robert Rorke writes enthusiastically in the New York Post about a flashback to the 1970s that sweeps people away and convinces with the talent and energy of the actors. In his review for The Hollywood Reporter , Tim Goodman again criticizes the portrayal of the series and sees a lot of wasted potential, which is not only due to Luhrmann's way of working. In the Feuilleton der Welt , Felix Zwinzscher writes that the series feels like a bad compromise and would ultimately fail because of Luhrmann's discouragement.

At Metacritic , the series received a Metascore of 69/100 based on 31 reviews and at Rotten Tomatoes , the critics gave an average rating of 74 percent (57 reviews), while users were 86 percent satisfied with the series.
