Mandrake (percussionist)

Mandrake or Mandrake Som (born May 21, 1934 in Guaratinguetá as Ivanir do Nascimento ; † September 8, 1988 in Rome ) was a Brazilian percussionist who worked in the field of bossa nova and jazz .

Live and act

Since 1959, Mandrake has worked with musicians from the Música Popular Brasileira such as Elis Regina , Jair Rodrigues João Gilberto , Maria Bethânia , Vinícius de Moraes , Wilson Simonal , Roberto Carlos Braga and Gal Costa . In 1969 he played an album with the group Os Brazões . With the singer Elza Soares he came to Italy in 1970, where he settled permanently. In the same year he accompanied Chico Buarque on his album Per un pugno di samba and then belonged to the group of Irio De Paula . In the mid-1970s he formed his band Mandrake Som , with whom he submitted several albums.

He can also be heard on albums by Gato Barbieri (soundtrack to Last Tango in Paris ), Hugo Heredia , Enrico Simonetti and the jazz rock band Perigeo . He also worked with Francesco Guccini , Toni Esposito, Ornella Vanoni , Gianni Ferrio and Liliana Gimenez.
