Manuel Poppinger (born May 19, 1989 in Innsbruck ) is a former Austrian ski jumper .

Career

Poppinger made his international debut at an FIS race in Seefeld on December 18, 2004 and finished in 53rd place. After further FIS races, he jumped in the FIS Cup for the first time on January 21, 2006 in Ljubno and immediately came third. The next day he was tenth. Two weeks later Poppinger made his Continental Cup debut in Villach . In the end he was 44. Then Poppinger jumped again in FIS races, where he won a jumping in Einsiedeln , and several times in the FIS Cup.

In summer 2007 he jumped again in the Continental Cup in Villach. While he missed the second run in the first competition as 37th, he scored his first COC points in the second jump as 30th. In winter he won an FIS race each in Seefeld and Pragelato . In Ramsau , Poppinger was disqualified in the first COC competition and in the second 14th he started in the team at the Junior World Championships in Zakopane and won the silver medal with Thomas Thurnbichler , David Unterberger and Andreas Strolz .

In the 2008/09 season , Poppinger competed in the Continental Cup more often and achieved his first top ten result in the Continental Cup in Villach in seventh place. He also achieved good results in the Alpine Cup and jumped onto the podium several times. In the 2009/10 season , Poppinger only competed in Continental Cups and some FIS Cups. However, he did not achieve good results. Only at the Continental Cup in Lillehammer with places 13 and 16 did he achieve notable successes. Even in the summer of 2010 , he did not achieve any success. At the FIS Cup in Villach he got into the second round, while he only managed to do this once in the COC.

At the start of winter, however, its shape rose again. In Erzurum he was eleventh and fourth and in Engelberg seventh and 13th in the COC. Because of these results, Poppinger was nominated in the national group for the two competitions of the Four Hills Tournament 2010/11 in Innsbruck and Bischofshofen . After he missed the qualification in Innsbruck, he was able to qualify in Bischofshofen and was 45 in his first World Cup competition on January 6, 2011. In the Four Hills Tournament he finished 61st with 80.0 points. For the rest of the season Poppinger started regularly in the Continental Cup and almost always made it to the second round. He achieved his first podium finish in the COC on January 22nd, 2011 in third place in Titisee-Neustadt .

On September 30, 2011, Poppinger started in the national group in the qualification for the Grand Prix jumping in Hinzenbach . After he survived this, he made his debut in the Grand Prix the following day , in which he missed the points as 46th. At the Four Hills Tournament 2011/12 he was again part of the national group. In Innsbruck he missed the qualification and in Bischofshofen he was 60th in the competition after the qualification was canceled. He started the rest of the season in the Continental Cup . His best result to date was achieved on March 10, 2012 in Kuopio , Finland , when he finished second behind his compatriot Wolfgang Loitzl .

In the 2012/13 season, Poppinger was still part of the Continental Cup team. About the national group he took part in the Grand Prix jumping in Hinzenbach, but missed the points with rank 48. As in the two previous events, he took part in the Four Hills Tournament as part of the national group . He only qualified for the competition in Bischofshofen, which he finished 44th. When he started in the Continental Cup on March 9, 2013, he achieved his best placement as second in Vikersund .

As part of the national group, Poppinger could not qualify for the Grand Prix jumping in Hinzenbach in the summer of 2013 . In Engelberg he achieved his first victory in a Continental Cup competition on December 28, 2013 on the Gross-Titlis-Schanze , after having already achieved three podium positions in December. Via the national group, he again took part in the Four Hills Tournament. This time he stayed on the World Cup team after the tour. When he was ski flying on the Kulm on January 11, 2014, he scored his first World Cup points in twelfth place. A week later, on January 18th, he took third place with the Austrian team in the team competition in Zakopane, Poland, and thus achieved his first podium finish in the World Cup. At the end of the season he finished 44th in the overall World Cup with 99 points .

In the summer of 2014 Poppinger started for the first time in Grand Prix show jumping outside of Austria, but always missed the points. During the 2014/15 World Cup season , he finished tenth in Sapporo on January 24, his first top ten placement in the World Cup. He then improved his best placement again on February 15th in ski flying in Vikersund with seventh place. That same month he took part in the Nordic World Ski Championships for the first time in Falun . He finished 32nd in the individual competition on the large hill and in the team competition he won the silver medal in second place behind Norway together with Stefan Kraft , Michael Hayböck and Gregor Schlierenzauer . In the overall World Cup he finished 37th with 128 points.

In the summer of 2015, Poppinger jumped into the points at all of his starts in the Grand Prix . On August 1st he took his first Grand Prix points as 28th at the Malinka in Wisła . On September 13th, he achieved his first top ten placement in tenth on the Gorney Gigant in Almaty . In the overall Grand Prix ranking, he finished 35th with 72 points. In the 2015/16 World Cup season he was part of the Austrian World Cup team again and also took part in the 2016 Ski Flying World Championship on the Kulm . He finished 17th in the individual and won the bronze medal in team flying together with Stefan Kraft, Manuel Fettner and Michael Hayböck. In the overall World Cup, he finished 27th and thus improved his best result again.

In July and August 2016, Poppinger took part in the Summer Grand Prix before he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while jumping during a training camp in Planica . He missed the rest of the 2016/17 season.

He made the comeback after his injury on July 1 and 2, 2017 as part of the FIS Cup in Villach . In the 2017/18 World Cup season he was part of the Austrian World Cup team until the Olympic Games and also took part in the 2018 Ski Flying World Championship in Oberstdorf . He finished 23rd in the individual and was fifth with the Austrian team. After he did not get beyond 18th place in the individual in the World Cup, he was not nominated for the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang . The rest of the season he jumped in the Continental Cup . On March 4, 2018, he achieved his third COC victory on the Renabakkene in Rena .

He ended his career on October 25, 2019.
