biography

Villar was born in Tondo and came from a poor background. He married Cynthia Aguilar, the daughter of Vergel Aguilar, a politician with the Nacionalista Party , and mayor of Las Piñas in the south of the Metro Manila region . With the support of his wife's wealthy family and good contacts, Manuel Villar began very successfully in 1975 with business in the real estate sector. According to Forbes in 2009, he has now become one of the wealthiest people in the Philippines.

From July 27, 1998 to November 13, 2000, Villar was Speaker of the Philippine House of Representatives . He was then a member of the Senate of the Philippines from 2001 to 2013, where he was President of the Senate pro tempore from 2001 to 2002 and President of the Senate from 2006 to 2008. On June 30, 2013 Villar resigned from the Senate after he was no longer allowed to run for election after two terms in a row.

As a presidential candidate in the elections in the Philippines in 2010 and chairman of the Nacionalista Party , he and his party reached an electoral alliance with several people from the left, e.g. Liza Maza and the human rights activist Satur Ocampo , and announced the fight against poverty through land reform, among other things . Villar described himself as the only one to stand up against the oligarchy (i.e. the established upper class). He achieved 15.42% of the vote and lost in third place to Benigno Aquino III. from the Liberal Party , son of former President Corazon Aquino .
